Production Over Hire Technician

This position supports production, installation, and strike for our immersive nighttime events (Glow at the Gardens, Blossoms of Light, and Trail of Lights). It also assists with setup and teardown of other public events at both York Street and Chatfield Farms, may support AV operations for private events (weddings, celebrations of life, organizational galas) at our York Street location, and helps with inventory storage and management. We are compiling a call list for technicians in electrics, sound engineering, carpentry, scenic painting, and prop making. This is an on-call/project role requiring a flexible schedule, with shifts during daytime, evening, or weekend hours, primarily outdoors in varied weather conditions. Demand varies seasonally, with peak hours from June-November and again in January. Shifts are offered via a call list as they become available.

Responsibilities

• Production shifts: Build props/scenic elements, scenic painting, prepare lighting/sound equipment for installation, and maintain existing décor, equipment, and materials.
• Installation and strike shifts: Install or strike lighting, sound, décor, scenic elements, and equipment for Glow at the Gardens, Blossoms of Light, and Trail of Lights.
• Event shifts: Stage, set, or teardown equipment for various public events.
• Storage shifts: Facilitate equipment transfers between storage locations and support inventory processes.
• AV operation shifts: Set up and operate basic speaker/sound board packages for private event clients.
• Regular attendance at the worksite is required.

Requirements

• Knowledge and skills in at least one of the following disciplines: electrics, sound engineering, carpentry, scenic painting, or prop making.
• Comfortable operating ladders, electric pallet jacks, golf carts, power tools, and similar equipment.
• Knowledge of electrical systems for lighting and sound installations.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to read/interpret diagrams.
• Ability to lift and maneuver up to 50 pounds regularly.
• Capable of highly physical labor outdoors in varied weather conditions, including working on hands and knees or at heights from ladders.
• May be required to wear a respirator on painting days.
• Proven excellent customer service, interpersonal, and communication skills.
• Ability to remain stable under pressure and handle stressful situations.
• Flexibility to modify plans as needed throughout the day.
• Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Suite products (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams).
• Ability to work overtime as necessary.
• Must be a positive representative of the Gardens both internally and externally.
• Commitment to working safely and cooperatively with colleagues and the public.

Qualifications

• High school diploma/GED and/or a combination of education and equivalent experience.
• Minimum of 2 years of experience in theatrical production (lighting, sound, carpentry, painting, or prop-making).

Travel

Up to 25% travel required, including remote locations where environments may vary significantly.
