Production Operator - Malting
About the role
As a Malt Processing Operator (Maltster), you will monitor all three phases of the malting process—steeping, germination, and kilning—to ensure guidelines and parameters are met. You will identify and address issues with product processing areas or machinery, perform routine and non-routine sanitation and maintenance, and assist in processing malted barley while maintaining product quality and plant sanitation.
Responsibilities
- Monitor all phases of the malting operation using control systems, sensory observation (hearing, sight, smell), and report deviations from standard practices or product parameters to supervisors.
- Perform product transfers, including steeping, loading/unloading kilns, and unloading germination vessels.
- Operate machines and equipment associated with the malting process.
- Complete all required plant sanitation activities.
- Monitor, coordinate, and expedite the flow of materials within the production area.
- Notify maintenance workers of equipment malfunctions and assist in repairs when capable.
- Maintain product workflow records and inspect in-process materials to ensure they meet specifications.
- Perform non-routine tasks such as shoveling, washing, or grain transfer during breakdowns or emergencies.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED.
- 2-year technical school education or equivalent experience.
- Strong ability to collaborate with others and work independently.
- Excellent communication skills.
Physical Demands
- Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands, reach with hands and arms, talk, hear, and taste or smell.
- Occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- Must regularly lift and/or move up to 55 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.
- Frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, outdoor weather conditions, extreme cold (non-weather), and extreme heat (non-weather).
- Moderate noise level in the work environment.
