Production Operator
About the role
The Production Operator will oversee and manage production by operating, monitoring, and troubleshooting production units and equipment to ensure personal safety, process safety, plant reliability, and product quality. The production units include tank farm, marine loading docks, and truck rack operations.
Responsibilities
- Gain the knowledge and skills to effectively operate production units
- Maintain accurate records of temperatures, pressures, and flow rates
- Diagnose and resolve unit upsets and equipment malfunctions
- Analyze and interpret plant process diagrams
- Ensure proper shift turnover by communicating effectively with the relieving shift
- Communicate with engineers, maintenance technicians, and other team members to identify and plan maintenance activities
- Perform preventive maintenance tasks
- Oversee the permitting of unit maintenance activities
- Manage tank gauging, truck loading/off-loading, and marine dock operations, including working on and around marine vessels and boats
- Ensure compliance with and adherence to all production, maintenance, health, safety, security, and environmental policies and procedures
- Participate in emergency training and respond to emergencies, including supporting the site's Emergency Response Team
- Perform physical tasks such as climbing ladders, stairs, entering confined spaces, lifting up to 50 lbs., and working in inclement weather
- Take immediate corrective actions in case of potential unsafe acts or behaviors
- Use computers and electronic devices for work activities
- Work at heights, including from scaffolding and grating
- Operate in a noisy industrial environment
- Work 12-hour shifts, including rotating day and night shifts, holidays, and weekends
- Respond to unscheduled callouts
- Complete required health, safety, security, and environmental compliance training
- Use appropriate personal protective equipment
Qualifications
- Industry experience preferred
- A high school diploma or equivalent required

Basic Requirements
- At least 18 years old
- Authorized to work in the United States permanently on a full-time basis without requiring sponsorship
- Current valid license to operate a motor vehicle in the United States
- Fluent in reading, speaking, and writing English
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card
- Compliance with site alcohol and drug standards, including random drug screenings
- Pass pre-employment background checks, including drug screening (hair sample), medical evaluation, and reference checks

The Vertex Refining Alabama Site is a 24/7 manufacturing plant in Saraland, Alabama, focusing on refined products and base oil for the lubricants market. It employs approximately 180 full-time staff, including both hourly and salaried employees. Known for its strong operational performance and community involvement, the site is represented by the United Steelworkers Union (USW).
