Production Manager, Gene Transfer Center (GTC)
Role Overview
PIC, a Genus PLC company, is seeking a Production Manager (Boar Stud Operations) to lead breeding, farrowing, and wean-to-finish production at the Apex Gene Transfer Center (GTC) in Mound City, SD. The role involves executing strategic and operational plans to meet departmental and company objectives, overseeing supervisors and technicians, and collaborating cross-functionally.
Responsibilities
- Ensure accurate semen production and manage inventory
- Support timely fulfillment of domestic and export orders while maintaining high genetic quality standards
- Directly oversee boar stud experience and demonstrate people leadership skills
- Train and onboard new employees
- Execute health management programs and health reporting functions
- Coordinate herd health testing and monitoring for export semen orders
- Treat sick animals according to PIC Health Assurance guidelines
- Execute feeding practices, timely feed ordering, and maintain sire body condition
- Maintain accurate record keeping in Prism and PICTraq databases
- Implement evolving Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Order supplies, control inventory, and maintain specialized equipment and technologies
- Direct and prioritize maintenance personnel
- Maintain cleanliness of the barn, laboratory, office, and employee areas
- Ensure compliance with genetic improvement, bio-security, animal welfare, and safety programs
- Provide employee reviews and performance assessments
- Follow company animal care policies and procedures
- Communicate effectively with teammates, interdependent departments, and supervisors
- Perform physical labor and weekends, evenings, holidays, and emergencies as needed
- Shower daily, follow strict biosecurity procedures, and be willing to travel approximately 5–10%
Requirements
- Minimum of a high school diploma; college degree preferred
- At least three (3) years of experience within contemporary swine production systems or Gene Transfer Center operations, with proven results
- Previous boar stud or semen processing experience preferred
- Proven experience working with culturally diverse teams in a fast-paced environment
- Proven ability to establish priorities, meet deadlines, and maintain accuracy
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
- Demonstrated ability to analyze and solve problems in a production environment
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and other relevant software applications
- Ability to learn new software programs
- Demonstrated ability to train and develop employees
- Strong commitment to teamwork and continuous improvement
- Willingness to shower daily in and out of facility and follow strict biosecurity procedures
- Ability to work weekends, evenings, holidays, and emergency situations as needed
- Ability to perform physical labor in a production environment
- Ability to travel approximately 5–10%
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
