Production Grinder - Deer Creek (Portland, OR)

About the Role

Remove gating material, blend, and grind casting surfaces to meet customer specifications. The objective is to grind and blend gating and defect areas on castings, providing surface finishing within dimensional tolerances while removing the minimum amount of metal necessary to remain within specified tolerances.

Responsibilities

• Review tech cards and blueprints to determine grinding requirements.
• Determine stock removal requirements and tolerances for removal of gate material or other added metal stock.
• Determine acceptance limits for grinding and blending defects.
• Use counter-balanced belt grinders, fixed grinders, hand-held grinders, air tools, and hand tools including files and mirrors to grind and polish casting areas.
• Wear required protective shields, clothing, wrist supports, glasses, and gloves during grinding operations.
• Visually inspect castings during grinding operations to ensure compliance with specifications.
• Make dimensional measurements on specified parts to ensure compliance with specifications; mark undersized areas for further inspection.
• Adhere to plant and department safety rules and safely operate all equipment and tools.
• Identify and report safety problems; handle hazardous waste as required.
• Perform minor maintenance and change belts on equipment.
• Complete logs and records.
• Perform other tasks as directed; may provide training and work direction to B-level grinders.

Safety Requirements

Responsibility for and demonstration of safe work practices is required. For tasks requiring respiratory protection (more than a filtering facepiece – dust mask), compliance with Oregon OSHA and Health Division rules is mandatory. Respirator use may be required, and selection will be based on work performed, exposure, and duration. If a tight-fitting respirator is required, facial hair, temple pieces on glasses, or other items interfering with the face-to-face piece seal are not permitted.

Requirements

• Grinding skills and working knowledge of grinding tools, equipment, and materials, or an equivalent combination of training and work experience.
• Ability to follow instructions, read, write, and perform basic arithmetic calculations.
• Ability to read, interpret, and follow specifications on Tech Cards.
• Ability to lift and/or maneuver objects weighing thirty to fifty pounds and occasionally up to eighty pounds.
• Ability to work in difficult conditions, including exposure to noise, dust, temperature extremes, and other elements for extended periods.

Individuals may have contact with or be required to handle hazardous waste.

Training

Training is provided on the job. May be required to complete hazardous waste management training. Production Grinders will cross-train in Belt Grind.
