This role is based primarily at our Jasper, IN headquarters; local candidates are strongly preferred.

About the role

The Product Test Engineer executes testing and calibration requirements for the R&D testing and calibration laboratory.

Responsibilities

  • Execute testing and calibration services in the lab.
  • Provide technical assistance to ensure accuracy of testing, analysis, calibration, and reporting to customers.
  • Validate engineering by identifying and testing to appropriate Kimball and external standards (ANSI, BIFMA, ASTM, ISO, ISTA, UL, CPSC, etc.).
  • Conduct testing and calibration in accordance with the quality system (ISO 17025).
  • Support product line management, engineering, and design in new product development, engineering changes, and process improvements.
  • Support PDP (Product Development Process) and NPI (New Product Introduction) processes.
  • Work with Product Line Management, Engineering, and Quality to resolve product field performance issues.
  • Develop new internal product performance standards and test methods to meet changing product use conditions and new product markets.
  • Develop new material performance test standards and test methods.
  • Support Product Line Management, field sales, and customer service with product performance technical inquiries.
  • Work with engineering and corporate risk on field liability risk issues.
  • Facilitate testing with outside labs.
  • Conduct facility tours of the testing lab for guests.
  • Complete projects in a timely manner.
  • Participate in BIFMA Committee work.

Requirements

  • Associate’s (2-year) or Bachelor’s (4-year) degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related science.
  • 2+ years in product testing (preferred).
  • 2+ years in quality system experience (preferred).

  • Technical: Knowledge of engineering sciences and practices; product performance standards (ANSI, BIFMA, ASTM, ISO, ISTA, UL, CPSC); materials test methods (ASTM, ISO); BIFMA and UL standards; calibration methods; mechanical and physical properties of metals, plastics, wood; PDP, NPI, and EC processes; product and material testing methodology; failure mode and effects analysis; design for manufacturing/assembly; sustainability and product design; root cause failure analysis; ISO 17025 quality system requirements.
  • Communication: Strong listening, written, verbal, and presentation skills; ability to communicate technical issues; represent Kimball in difficult business and technical discussions with customers.
  • Leadership: Organizational skills, team-building, initiative, respect for others’ viewpoints.
  • Business: Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks, follow standard practices and procedures, time management, understanding of role in the company, knowledge of the furniture industry, understanding of financial fundamentals.
