About the role

This position is for an engineer who will own all aspects of product development of new diode laser modules, from concept through production. This position will shape the future of the next generation laser module designs.

Responsibilities

  • Independently research new developments in packaging that can be incorporated in next-generation laser-diode modules.
  • Lead the technical development of diode laser-based packages from concept into production.
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders to identify technology gaps and provide roadmaps for closure.
  • Work with multifunctional teams to develop custom assembly equipment, including optical, mechanical, and software.
  • Utilize DFSS concepts including DOE and FMEA, Monte-Carlo analysis throughout development process to influence designs and achieve optimized results.
  • Develop and optimize designs while meeting performance, cost, reliability and schedule requirements.
  • Validate the manufacturability of new designs by identifying critical manufacturing tolerances and the process steps that lead to a viable process capability.
  • Develop qualification test schedules that include environmental testing, accelerated aging, and design margin assessment by testing to failure.
  • Present information in written and oral reports to all levels within nLight.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Optical, Electrical, Chemical, Mechanical, Physics) or similar field is required.
  • Hands-on experience building and testing optical systems (ex. optical fibers, lasers, optics) and precision opto-mechanical systems and tools.
  • Thorough knowledge of laser diodes, optics and fiber coupling methods.
  • Data analysis and modeling (MATLAB, Python, R, JMP, Minitab, etc).
  • Experienced in programming laboratory equipment (LabVIEW, MATLAB, Python etc).
  • High reliability laser packaging and opto-mechanical design experience.
  • Process Development experience, including DOE and DFSS.

Preferred

  • Experienced in modeling thermo-optical systems (Ansys, COMSOL, Nastran, Zemax, etc).
  • Background and experience in thermal modeling and experimentation including experience with two-phase cooling.

Compensation and Benefits
