About the Role

As a Lead UX Designer specializing in design systems, you will be instrumental in shaping Target’s digital experience across multiple platforms. Your primary focus will be on evolving and maintaining our comprehensive design system, which is utilized by our stores, supply chain teams, and digital interfaces to create consistent, engaging, and accessible user experiences. You will lead initiatives to develop multi-platform libraries, design tokens, and governance frameworks that maximize user adoption and reusability. Your role involves defining high-quality, user-centric design components that streamline workflows, enhance efficiency, and ensure visual and functional consistency across all guest and employee-facing digital touchpoints.

Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams—including designers, developers, and product managers—you will drive the product development process, ensuring that designs meet user needs, align with business objectives, and adhere to technological standards. Qualifications

  • 6+ years of experience in design systems or related UX design roles, with a strong portfolio demonstrating successful development of complex products with reusable components.
  • Advanced proficiency in Figma for designing, governing, and scaling component libraries.
  • Deep understanding of design systems, including governance, maintenance, and the communication of their value within large organizations.
  • Strong ability to influence strategy and collaborate effectively with cross-disciplinary teams including design, product, and engineering.
  • Excellent communication and storytelling skills, capable of articulating design decisions with logic and data-driven insights.
  • Experience working in agile environments, managing competing priorities, and meeting deadlines.
  • Fluency in responsive design, accessible web standards, and mobile interfaces (iOS and Android) compliant with WCAG Accessibility standards.
  • Knowledge of version control, design tokens, information architecture, and interaction design best practices.
  • Ability to mentor and guide other designers, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and high craftsmanship.

Responsibilities

  • Partner and collaborate with cross-functional teams of designers, developers, and product managers to identify, prioritize, and create reusable, responsive, and accessible design components.
  • Drive the development of components and patterns within Figma, ensuring consistency with code, information architecture, tokens, and best practices.
  • Maintain high standards of quality for design assets, including thorough documentation and usage guidelines that facilitate adoption across teams.
  • Work closely with developers to create and maintain coded components that align with the design system, ensuring seamless implementation and functionality.
  • Foster education by creating training resources, documentation, and best practices to support teams adopting the design system.
  • Stay informed of industry trends, emerging best practices, and innovative design patterns across platforms and industries.
  • Operate effectively within agile sprints, helping prioritize work based on team capacity, resources, and strategic goals.
  • Mentor and coach other designers, promoting a culture of high-quality design and continuous learning.
  • Ensure all design system work adheres to accessibility standards, user research insights, and visual consistency, enhancing overall user experience.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships across teams to advocate for user-centered design and system adoption.
