About The Role

Gusto is seeking an experienced Product Designer to join the Retirement team, which focuses on creating accessible and easy-to-manage financial products aimed at closing the retirement gap for small business owners and their employees. In this role, you will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including Product, Engineering, Data, and Research to shape strategic initiatives, align stakeholders, and craft a cohesive retirement experience across the entire user journey. You will serve as the design lead for your projects, owning the end-to-end design process from conception through delivery and iteration. Your responsibilities will include improving onboarding and account management workflows to increase user confidence and retention, designing seamless integrations between payroll and retirement services, and applying your discerning design judgment to incorporate AI effectively into user experiences. Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience in product design with a strong portfolio demonstrating end-to-end shipped projects and measurable impact
• Expertise in interaction design, information architecture, and visual design, especially for complex, form-heavy workflows
• Proven experience working in regulated or high-trust domains such as fintech, healthcare, insurance, or benefits/retirement
• Demonstrable fluency in AI integration within design practices, including prototyping, testing, and shipping AI-enhanced features
• Ability to bridge design and code, working closely with engineers or utilizing AI-assisted tools to accelerate development
• Strong skills in operating within ambiguity, translating complex inputs into clear goals, tradeoffs, and tangible outcomes
• Experience contributing to or building design systems with reusable components and patterns
• Excellent partnership skills, with a history of leading multi-team initiatives and aligning cross-functional stakeholders
• Content design experience is a plus, particularly in making complex concepts accessible and understandable

Responsibilities

• Partner with Product Management to define customer problems, develop strategies, and establish success metrics across activation, engagement, and retention
• Collaborate with Data and Research teams to analyze user behavior, identify funnel drop-offs, and inform iterative design improvements
• Lead the full design lifecycle for features, including scoping, prototyping, testing, and delivering MVPs and subsequent enhancements
• Translate regulatory and compliance requirements into intuitive flows and UI patterns that foster trust and transparency
• Craft compelling product narratives and presentations to align stakeholders around design decisions and strategic directions
• Mentor and critique peers’ work, elevating the overall quality of design within the organization and fostering innovation in AI usage
• Champion and evolve the design system, contributing patterns and components that ensure consistency and scalability
• Utilize AI tools for rapid prototyping, customer testing, and learning, demonstrating where AI adds value to the user experience
• Advocate for user-centered design principles while balancing business and technical constraints to deliver impactful solutions
