About the role
The Product Design Engineer plays a crucial role in designing new products and enhancing existing ones. They translate Sales and Marketing functional specifications into robust engineering solutions, applying core engineering principles and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to evaluate and optimize product performance.
Responsibilities
- Work with cross-functional teams to develop new products and conduct design reviews
- Conduct product engineering activities, including troubleshooting performance issues, root cause analysis, and product design enhancements
- Develop project plans using MS Project or similar tools
- Create solid models and cross-sectional layouts using SolidWorks 3-D software
- Perform tolerance stack-up analysis and apply GD&T
- Develop product specifications, identify instrumentation and measurements, and validate new product designs
- Provide technical assistance to customers, suppliers, and internal groups such as Sales, Marketing, Manufacturing, Field Service, Purchasing, and Quality Control
- Avoidance of design flaws and defects, ensuring compliance with certifications and regulatory agencies (UL, CSA, CE, NSF, ATEX)
- Resolve problems in a timely manner, gather and analyze information, develop alternative solutions, and work well in group problem-solving situations
- Coach lower-level product design engineers
Requirements
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from an accredited college or university
- Experience: Minimum of 3 years of related work experience
Qualifications
- Proficient in SolidWorks 3-D design software or equivalent and experience performing Finite Element Analysis
- Able to apply engineering principles to develop component and simple system designs to meet specifications
- Familiar with various molding technologies including investment casting, die casting, injection molding and sand casting
- Able to develop an accurate project plan and identify instrumentation and measurements required to validate new product designs
- Understand fundamental manufacturing processes for wrought and cast, gray and ductile iron, steel, stainless steel, bronze, aluminum, and plastics
- Ability to perform analysis of design and performance data resulting from R&D studies
- Knowledge of standards and regulations such as ASTM, AISI, ANSI B31.1, API-675, and ANSI/HI 6.6
- Ability to obtain approvals as required with respect to certifying and regulatory agencies (UL, CSA, CE, NSF, ATEX)
