PRODUCE SUPERVISOR
Farm To People · Brooklyn, NY · 1 mo ago
Management$20–$25/hrFull-time
Job Description
We are hiring a Produce Lead for our Brooklyn warehouse. The Produce Lead is the standards-bearer for everything related to produce in our operation. You are accountable for the quality of every piece of produce we receive, store, pick, and pack — and you set the bar for the teams that handle it. This is a hands-on leadership role: you'll be on the floor receiving deliveries, walking the cooler, training associates, and making the calls that determine whether produce can be delivered or shrunk.
Compensation
$20–$25/hour, based on experience.
Responsibilities
- Own the quality standard for all produce in the warehouse.
- Conduct daily quality walks of cooler and pick areas; pull anything that doesn't meet quality standard.
- Oversee produce inventory: verify counts, weights, and quality against inventory. Document issues with photos and notes for the procurement team.
- Enforce FIFO & FEFO rotation from the dock through storage to the pick faces.
- Enforce correct storage by item: temperature, humidity, ethylene separation, stacking limits. Audit cooler organization daily.
- Monitor cooler and freezer temperatures and escalate any equipment issues immediately.
- Own produce shrink: track it and drive it down by attacking root causes (over-ordering, mishandling, poor rotation, supplier quality).
- Lead, train, and coach associates on produce quality & storage. Run shift huddles addressing produce quality topics.
- Build and maintain SOPs for produce receiving, prepping, handling, storage, & packing. Update them as seasons, suppliers, protocols, and products change, and ensure the team is trained on the current version.
- Collect product information from the procurement team and lead product education in the warehouse for new seasonal produce coming online.
- Jump in hands-on with receiving, picking, prepping, stocking, prepping, and cleanup/shrink as the shift demands, and set the standard by example.
Requirements
- 2+ years of produce handling experience (grocery, wholesale, distribution, or farm operations).
- Prior lead, supervisor, or shift-lead experience strongly preferred.
- Deep produce knowledge.
- Comfortable making judgment calls under time pressure and standing behind them.
- Able to work on your feet for 8-10 hours.
- Able to work in refrigeration with temperatures ranging between 36°F-40°F, and occasionally work in our freezer.
- Strong communicator, organized, and genuinely passionate about transforming the food system.
