About the role
The Produce Department Manager ensures customers’ needs are met and exceeded through effective day-to-day management of operations and merchandising for the assigned department. This position oversees product and conditions, including preparation and display areas, back room, equipment, schematics, and inventory. The Manager provides leadership to department associates, fostering a culture aligned with The Save Mart Companies’ mission and values while training and developing employees for success and career advancement.
Responsibilities
- Provides customers with a remarkable shopping experience by demonstrating, training, and holding store associates accountable for excellent customer service
- Achieves department financial goals (sales, profit and loss, projections, metrics, and analysis) by implementing best practices and optimization strategies
- Leads department staff with a focus on accountability and high-level business performance
- Develops department staff through annual appraisals, supervision reports, goal-setting, performance reviews, and employee surveys
- Implements visual merchandising plans, emphasizing freshness and innovation
- Utilizes resources to improve productivity, labor efficiency, and the shopping experience
- Oversees schematic implementation, stocking standards, item-to-tag integrity, and back-room organization
- Manages product rotation, spoils, shrink, and markdowns
- Ensures department cleanliness and adherence to company guidelines for product preparation and display
- Manages sign and price integrity
- Trains staff on department procedures, safety, and food safety
- Orders product using inventory systems, pre-orders, and promotion/seasonal planning
- Analyzes product performance to maximize sales and profitability
- Manages department inventory accuracy
- Ensures produce/floral products are prepared for display according to company policy
- Contributes to overall store conditions, including safety, sanitation, and hazardous waste management
- Performs other duties as assigned
Requirements
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, leadership, and team-building skills
- Strong customer service and suggestive selling ability
- Strong organization, administration, and math skills
- Knowledge of department operations, financials, produce/floral products, seasonal needs, and food safety regulations
- Familiarity with visual merchandising techniques and professional produce tools/equipment
- Understanding of applicable union contractual agreement language
Qualifications
- One year of college, vocational school, or equivalent knowledge gained through formal education or training
- Two years of Produce Department experience or current Center Store, Meat, or Bakery Department Manager role
- Availability to work a variety of required retail hours
Physical Demands
- Store environment: ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, stoop, use stairs, reach, pull, and lift objects
- Requires lifting up to 40 lbs.
Pay
$30.87 per hour
