About the role

The Produce Department Manager ensures customers’ needs are met and exceeded through effective day-to-day management of operations and merchandising for the assigned department. This position oversees department product and conditions, including preparation and display areas, back room, equipment, schematics, and inventory. The Manager provides leadership and direction to department associates, trains and develops employees, and manages department performance and productivity.

Responsibilities

• Provides customers with a remarkable shopping experience by demonstrating, training, and holding store associates accountable for excellent customer service
• Achieves department financials (sales, profit and loss, projections, metrics, and analysis) by identifying, defining, and implementing best practices and optimization strategies
• Directly leads department staff with a focus on accountability and achieving high-level business performance
• Develops department staff through annual appraisals, supervision reports, performance reviews, and employee surveys
• Implements department’s visual merchandising plan, emphasizing “fresh” and innovative solutions
• Utilizes resources to improve productivity, flexibility, and efficiencies of labor, and quality of shopping experience
• Oversees schematic implementation, stocking standards, item-to-tag integrity, and back room organization
• Manages product rotation, spoils, shrink, and markdowns
• Ensures department’s overall cleanliness and conditions
• Manages sign and price integrity
• Ensures produce products are prepared according to company guidelines
• Trains department staff on procedures, hands-on safety, and food safety
• Orders product using order/inventory system, pre-orders, and promotion/seasonal planning
• Analyzes and manages product performance to maximize sales and profitability
• Manages the accuracy of department inventory
• Ensures produce/floral products are prepared for display according to company policy
• Contributes to overall store conditions, including safety, sanitation, hazardous waste, and protection of company assets
• Performs other duties as assigned

Requirements

• Excellent communication, interpersonal, leadership, and team-building skills
• Strong customer service skills and suggestive selling ability
• Strong organization, administration, and math skills
• Knowledge of department operations and financials
• Knowledge of produce and floral products, seasonal needs, and trends in cooking/recipes
• Knowledge of department food safety and hazardous materials rules/regulations
• Knowledge of visual merchandising techniques
• Knowledge of use and care of professional produce tools and equipment
• Familiarity with applicable union contractual agreement language

Qualifications

• One year of college (or vocational school or equivalent knowledge gained through formal education, specialized training, or additional job experience)
• Two years of Produce Department experience or current Center Store, Meat, or Bakery Department Manager role
• Available to work a variety of required retail hours

Physical Demands

• Store environment: ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, stoop, use stairs, reach, pull, and lift objects
• Requires lifting up to 40 lbs.

Pay

$31.17 per hour
