Process Mechanical Engineer (industrial water/wastewater)

About the role

Brown and Caldwell (BC), a national environmental engineering and consulting firm, is seeking an experienced Process Mechanical Engineer to support private sector design project delivery for industrial water and wastewater clients nationwide. This role will focus on the design and construction phase support of both simple and complex discrete process-mechanical elements of environmental infrastructure projects.

The Process Mechanical Engineer will lead simple and assist with complex discrete process-mechanical elements through conceptual, preliminary, and final design phases. This includes evaluating options to determine suitable processes and equipment, preparing calculations for sizing and selecting equipment, piping, and ancillaries, and coordinating interdisciplinary efforts with architects, structural engineers, electrical and instrumentation engineers, and building-mechanical engineers to develop final design drawings and specifications. The role also involves directing BIM professionals in creating 3D models for construction contract drawings, performing submittal reviews, responding to contractor inquiries, and providing site observations during the construction phase.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design of simple process-mechanical elements.
• Prepare calculations and select piping and equipment as per project requirements for simple design elements.
• Coordinate interdisciplinary teams to develop comprehensive solutions for simple design elements.
• Guide BIM professionals in creating accurate and efficient 3D models and contract design documents for simple design elements.
• Review construction phase submittals to ensure adherence to project specifications for simple design elements.
• Respond to contractor requests for information during the construction phase for simple design elements.
• Conduct site observations during the construction phase for simple design elements.
• Provide mentorship, guidance, and knowledge-sharing to less experienced team members.
• Adapt and execute additional assignments based on evolving project needs.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in civil, environmental, chemical, or mechanical engineering or related field (or equivalent experience).
• Engineer in Training (EIT) License.
• Minimum of 2 years of process mechanical engineering or related experience.
• Experience coordinating with interdisciplinary teams.
• Certification in the SMS Framework, with progression through SMS competencies.

Preferred Qualifications

• 5+ years in detailed engineering design, including multi-disciplinary design projects.
• Hands-on understanding of multidisciplinary design.
• Experience in private sector water, wastewater, or infrastructure design.
• Experience in detailed process mechanical design for water and wastewater treatment processes, including membrane filtration, aerobic/anaerobic biological systems, biosolids handling, chemical precipitation, liquid storage, and pumping systems.
• Strong decisiveness, communication, and organizational skills.
• Emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills, including comfort dealing directly with clients.

Skills

• Proficient use of word processing and spreadsheet-based software tools.
• Intermediate understanding of process mechanical engineering principles and practices.
• Intermediate analytical skills for evaluating and designing infrastructure processes.
• Basic use of process-mechanical software analysis tools.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams.
• Basic understanding of the construction process for environmental infrastructure projects.

Pay

The anticipated starting pay range for this position varies by location and is based on skills, experience, and education:

• Location A: $78,000 - $106,000
• Location B: $85,000 - $116,000
• Location C: $93,000 - $127,000
