Merrick & Company is seeking a mid-level Process Engineer to join our team in Oak Ridge, TN. We’re looking for candidates passionate about nuclear design who enjoy working on a multidisciplinary team and appreciate the Knoxville, TN area. This role focuses on innovative nuclear and energy projects, collaborating with a diverse team of engineers and designers to deliver high-quality design and engineering solutions. Hybrid in-office/WFH schedules are available.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and solve complex problems with guidance from more senior staff.
  • Work with other disciplines to improve accuracy of deliverables, meet schedules, and stay within budget.
  • Prepare process design deliverables, including:
    • Process Flow Diagrams
    • Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams
    • Equipment sizing calculations
    • Process line sizing calculations
    • Pressure relief device sizing calculations
    • Mass & energy balances / process simulations
    • Equipment and Instrument datasheets
    • Piping/equipment specifications
  • Work in a multi-disciplined design team environment.
  • Interpret customer requirements or code/standard requirements to establish design criteria.
  • Meet with clients to develop relationships.
  • Prepare proposal estimates for design work.
  • Provide in-depth and comprehensive technical peer reviews on design documents, relative to experience level, in a timely manner.
  • Deliver status updates to lead engineers and demonstrate efficient task progress.
  • Review design drawings and documents for specification and scope compliance in a timely manner.
  • Lead project tasks or small projects and participate in client meetings.
  • Represent the Process group for internal and external clients.
  • Coordinate design inputs and activities of other engineering disciplines.
  • Direct preparation of process design deliverables by more junior engineers.
  • Stand in for Process lead in project meetings.
  • Act as sole Process lead on small-scale projects.
  • Perform many process tasks autonomously (e.g., calculations, report writing, options study).
  • Review and check the work of other process engineers for accuracy and completeness.
  • PE Stamp design documents on projects (if candidate has PE license).

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • 3+ years of related engineering experience.
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) License preferred; interest in obtaining a P.E. License when eligible is expected.
  • Generally sound technical knowledge to produce design deliverables with some guidance from senior engineers.
  • Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts (e.g., logarithms, differential equations, integrations) to solve design problems and analyze test data.
  • Ability to respond to inquiries from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
  • Ability to develop presentations that effectively convey information.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid technical conclusions.
  • Working knowledge of industry codes and standards.
  • Exercises initiative, judgment, and knowledge in areas of responsibility.
  • Listens well, follows instructions without repeated reminders, and provides clear instructions when delegating work.
  • Understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities, including professional communication with coworkers and clients.
  • Provide mentorship to junior engineers.
  • Ability to review technical design documents/packages and identify issues or pitfalls, even if solutions are not immediately identifiable.
  • Experience using ChemCad/Aspen/HYSYS (or similar) process simulator and AFT Fathom, AFT Arrow (or similar) for hydraulic pipe flow modeling preferred.
  • Travel to client sites as needed.
  • Client projects for this position require US Citizenship.
