About the Role
Canton Drop Forge is a worldwide leader in custom and closed die forgings, with over 100 years of industry expertise. As a Process Engineer, you will support the design, development, and optimization of forging processes to improve safety, quality, and efficiency in a unionized, heavy industrial environment. This role collaborates with engineering, operations, maintenance, quality, and tooling teams to drive continuous improvement and ensure manufacturing excellence across six major markets: aerospace, oilfield, power generation, mechanical power transmission, off-highway, and railway industries.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and refine forging processes for new and existing jobs, implementing best practices to reduce cycle times, improve die life, and enhance part quality.
- Lead root cause analysis and corrective actions for process and product issues, analyzing performance data and process trends to identify improvement opportunities.
- Support non-conformance investigations related to process deviations or customer complaints.
- Ensure process compliance with industry standards and accreditations (e.g., ASTM, ASME, NADCAP) in collaboration with Quality, Operations, and Metallurgy teams.
- Develop and maintain control plans, PFMEAs, and process documentation to improve process capability.
- Conduct time studies and capacity analyses to support workflow optimization.
- Identify and implement Lean, Six Sigma, or Kaizen initiatives to reduce waste, enhance throughput, and improve safe work practices.
- Develop and update work instructions, process flow diagrams, and setup sheets, maintaining accurate process documentation for audits, training, and traceability.
- Standardize forging practices across shifts and equipment to ensure repeatability.
- Provide technical support to production operators, tooling teams, and maintenance, assisting in troubleshooting forging processes and material handling issues.
- Participate in Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) and Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) activities for new product launches.
- Support or lead capital projects involving new equipment, layout changes, or automation, evaluating and recommending new tools, materials, and technologies to improve process reliability.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Industrial, or Metallurgical Engineering.
- 10+ years of experience within Process Engineering in a Forging or Steel Manufacturing environment in lieu of degree; forging experience is strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with closed die forging processes, tooling, and forging equipment.
- Experience with CAD software (e.g., PTC Creo, SolidWorks, AutoCAD).
- Working knowledge of Lean, Six Sigma, and root cause analysis tools.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Understanding of basic metallurgy, grain flow, and forging defects.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprint drawings, including GD&T.
- Flexibility to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
