About the role

This position involves leading or supervising probation and parole work of considerable difficulty. The incumbent is responsible for professional probation and parole work, promoting team building and cooperation, analyzing reports, handling complaints, auditing casework, acting as a liaison, conducting risk and needs assessments, assisting offenders in decision-making, preparing and maintaining records, and identifying criminal activities.

Responsibilities

  • Requests arrest warrants for non-compliance by offenders as required by policy and procedures.
  • Utilizes compiled offender information to determine proper steps for treatment.
  • Promotes team building and cooperation with other team members.
  • Mentors and assists in training of new staff.
  • Analyzes reports for needed action related to offenders under supervision.
  • Handles offender complaints and grievances quickly and professionally.
  • Uses compliance reports on a monthly basis to determine work compliance with standards and monitors offenders' compliance with release requirements.
  • Audits casework for quality and adherence to standards and conducts annual offender interviews.
  • Acts as a liaison with judges, court personnel, law enforcement, and other agencies involved in the probation/parole program.
  • Interacts positively with fellow employees and offenders to foster a respectful and harmonious working environment.
  • Conducts validated risk and needs assessments using motivational and interview techniques to determine offenders' risk to re-offend and identify criminogenic risk factors.
  • Aids offenders in decision-making processes and assesses the availability of service providers to deliver appropriate services.
  • Prepares and maintains offenders' records and reports, including identifying criminal activities and background information.
  • Prepares narrative reports of the investigation process and total caseload activities.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree and experience equivalent to three years of full-time professional level experience in one or more of the following: probation/parole, counseling, social work, investigative, or legal experience.
  • Full-time relevant professional experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • Graduate course work credit may substitute for the required experience to a maximum of two years (e.g., an additional 36 graduate quarter hours in one or a combination of the above-listed fields may substitute for one year of the required experience).
  • Must be willing and able to qualify with, carry, and use assigned weapons.
  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age on the date of application.
  • Must be a citizen of the United States.
  • Must have a good moral character, as determined by investigation.
  • Must complete a criminal history disclosure form in a manner approved by the appointing authority.
  • Must agree to release all records involving their criminal history to the appointing authority.
  • Must supply a fingerprint sample in a manner prescribed by the TBI for a fingerprint-based criminal history records check.
  • Must have no conviction for a felony or any domestic assault convictions or have been discharged under any other than honorable conditions from any branch of the United States armed forces.
  • Must pass a physical examination administered by a licensed physician that is consistent with the Americans with Disabilities Act and that relates to the essential functions of the position.
  • Must pass a psychological evaluation administered by a licensed mental health professional that is consistent with the Americans with Disabilities Act and that relates to the essential functions of the position.
  • Must submit to and pass a pre-employment screening test for use of illegal drugs.
  • Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license at the time of appointment.
  • Upon appointment, must successfully complete all additional prescribed course of instruction at the Tennessee Correction Academy and any and all on-line training.

Qualifications

  • Education and Experience: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree and experience equivalent to three years of full-time professional level experience in one or more of the following: probation/parole, counseling, social work, investigative, or legal experience.
  • Substitution of Experience for Education: Full-time relevant professional experience, to include law enforcement experience, may be substituted for the bachelor's degree requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • Substitution of Graduate Course Work for Experience: Graduate course work credit received from an accredited college or university in social science, behavioral science, criminal justice, criminology, social work, and/or law may substitute for the required experience to a maximum of two years (e.g., an additional 36 graduate quarter hours in one or a combination of the above-listed fields may substitute for one year of the required experience).

Necessary Special Qualifications

  • Willingness and ability to qualify with, carry, and use assigned weapons.
  • Age of at least eighteen (18) years on the date of application.
  • Citizenship of the United States.
