About the role

The NYC Department of Probation (DOP) seeks Probation Officer Trainees to engage in creative and effective community supervision. The department aims to enhance community safety and reduce recidivism through partnerships and support services.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts court ordered investigations to gather detailed information about offenses, offenders, and impacts.
  • Prepares and submits written reports and recommendations using available technology.
  • Supervises probationers and provides supportive casework/counseling services.
  • Refers probationers to social, governmental, and community agencies for rehabilitation.
  • Makes home visits and performs other field work to monitor probationers.
  • Corresponds with and visits relatives, community agencies, and employers to ensure compliance with probation conditions.
  • Prepares and maintains case records using available technology.
  • May be assigned to specialized units.
  • Operates a motor vehicle.
  • May be required to carry a firearm for certain assignments.

Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, including or supplemented by 30 semester credits in relevant fields such as sociology, law, psychology, education, social work, criminology, rehabilitation counseling, counseling, guidance, or related areas.
  • A valid motor vehicle driver license in the State of New York.
  • Eligibility for Peace Officer status.
  • Eligible for the 55-a Program for individuals with disabilities.

  • Minimum qualifications include a baccalaureate degree and 30 semester credits in relevant fields.
