Probation Officer I - Snowflake IPS

About the Role

Probation officers provide casework services to probationers at the direction of the Superior Court under the provisions of evidence-based practices and consistent with the Arizona Code of Judicial Administration. The role involves supervising caseloads, conducting field contacts, performing investigations, evaluating progress, and ensuring compliance with probation conditions. Due to the nature of the probationers—convicted felons, felony adjudicated delinquents, and individuals with domestic violence convictions—this position is designated as safety-sensitive and exposes officers to a risk of assault. All probation officers must demonstrate proficiency in defensive tactics through testing as outlined in ACJA 6-107(G)(1)(b).

Responsibilities

• Supervise and observe probationers for compliance with probation conditions, including counseling and field contacts (home, work, school, treatment facilities, or detention).
• Obtain, assemble, and maintain complete identification records, including arrest reports, contact notes, and case plans, to prepare written reports for the court.
• Build relationships to encourage compliance with case plans through frequent telephone, work, school, and home contacts.
• Direct or refer probationers and guardians to community resources, treatments, or interventions based on assessments and probation conditions.
• Participate in case review conferences to determine if changes in supervision levels are warranted.
• Perform searches, administer breathalyzers/urinalysis, and locate absconders.
• Serve warrants, make arrests, and bring probationers before the court, including those facing revocation.
• Exercise the authority of peace officers in the performance of duties.
• Appear and testify in court.
• Monitor restitution and probation fee payments while ensuring victims' notification rights are upheld.
• Respond appropriately in confrontational situations using defensive tactics and techniques learned at the Defensive Tactics Safety Training Academy.
• Demonstrate competency in physical and verbal defensive tactics through proficiency testing, including:
  • Forcefully raising arms above the head (straight arm wristlock and takedown).
  • Performing minor aerobic activity.
  • Standing for up to 2 hours at a time.
  • Engaging in balanced movements.
  • Throwing hand strikes (fist and palm heel strikes).
  • Using impact weapons (e.g., swinging a 16-ounce baton).
  • Kicking at targets below 24 inches (front snap kicks).
  • Performing controlled falls and returning to a standing position unassisted.
  • Completing hand strikes and kick drills at partial speed.
  • Sustaining exposure to Oleoresin (OC) spray.
  • Engaging in ground fighting techniques.
  • Bending knees to lower center and touch the ground with one hand.
  • Bending knees to a 45-degree angle for ground techniques.
• Investigate referred cases and prepare written reports for the court.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Ability to operate equipment such as motor vehicles, computers, telephones, radios, handcuffs, body armor, and other case-related tools.
• Independent body mobility to stand, walk, bend, and sit for prolonged periods.
• Proficiency in defensive tactics as demonstrated through testing, including physical techniques and verbal de-escalation.
