About the role

The Missouri Department of Corrections is dedicated to transforming lives through its employees, equipping individuals in the criminal justice system with the skills needed to reintegrate successfully into their communities. Responsibilities

  • Investigates offender's home/work/social environments for circuit courts/Parole Board; collects/verifies/evaluates data; incorporates into reports and records; assesses needs/risk levels to determine appropriate supervision strategies to ensure effective offender management/public safety; and submits reports thereof to designated legal authorities.
  • Contacts offenders in their homes, places of employment or confinement and counsels them regarding personal/adjustment problems; attends court to receive court assignments/make reports.
  • Affords assistance in vocational/educational/social adjustment planning for assigned offenders; cooperates with public/private agencies and law enforcement agencies; investigates offender violations; takes appropriate action including issuance of a warrant.
  • Prepares statistical reports of activities; administers/observes breathalyzer/urinalysis testing; assists in special investigations/research projects/other activities; serves on committees/task forces within the Department and community; performs other related work as assigned; as employee becomes more experienced/demonstrates proficiency, levels of supervision become more general.

Requirements

  • Possession of a valid vehicle operator’s license.
  • Successful completion of safety training including defensive tactics and the ability to re-qualify annually.

Qualifications

  • Four or more years of experience as a Probation & Parole Assistant, Correctional Officer, or Office Support Assistant or above within the Missouri Department of Corrections.
  • OR Four or more years of vocational or paraprofessional experience in social services, probation and parole, corrections casework/custody, law enforcement, guidance/counseling, mental health, health, substance use, public/business administration, or experience closely related to the listed responsibilities;
  • AND possession of a valid vehicle operator’s license.

Skills

Employees must possess the ability to investigate offender's home/work/social environments, collect/verify/evaluate data, and take appropriate action in response to offender violations. They should also be able to counsel offenders, cooperate with various agencies, and assist in vocational/educational/social adjustment planning.

Pay

The department offers a guaranteed 1% pay increase for every two years of continuous service up to 20 years. Additionally, there are various differentials based on the type of facility and shift worked.

Schedule

Shifts may vary, but the department is open 24/7 and offers a range of positions to accommodate different schedules.
