About the role

Responsibilities
- Under close supervision, learn to apply the principles and techniques of probation work.
- Supervise and counsel individuals detained in, committed to, or sheltered in one of several County juvenile institutions.
- Serve as a supervisor for minors assigned to Work Projects.
- Provide close supervision of minors placed on home supervision.
Requirements
- Equivalent to an Associate of Arts degree (60 semester units or 90 quarter units), from an accredited college or university.
- Up to one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, paid law enforcement or correctional work in a probation agency, parole agency, or correctional institution.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of principles and techniques applicable to the care and rehabilitation of juvenile delinquents.
- Knowledge of the growth, development, needs and problems of minors.
- Ability to secure the respect and confidence of adolescents.
- Ability to cope with hostility and aggressive behavior.
- Ability to work well as a member of a team.
- Ability to exercise good judgment and act calmly in emergency situations.
- Ability to recognize subtle changes in behavior.
- Ability to prepare concise and clear reports.
- Ability to maintain records.
- Ability to communicate with individuals from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Physical requirements including frequent performance of a wide variety of physical tasks such as standing, walking, running, stooping, bending, climbing stairs, and lifting of individuals.
- Occasional contact with hostile individuals and exposure to physical and verbal abuse while restraining individuals.
- Driver’s license required at the time of appointment.
- Willingness to work irregular hours, holidays, and weekends.

Benefits
Probation Aide positions are currently temporary intermittent positions, also known as on-call positions, which are limited to 1560 hours worked per year. Incumbents may be assigned to full-time and/or part-time hours, not to exceed 1560 hours worked.
Pay
The pay for this position is commensurate with experience.
