About the Role

This position involves inserting and monitoring peripherally placed central venous (PICC), mid-line, and peripheral intravenous (IV) catheters. The role serves as a resource and consultant for staff regarding IV therapy assessment, products, and procedures, while maintaining competencies in vascular access device management.

Responsibilities

  • Insert PICC lines and mid-line catheters, determine placement via X-ray follow-up, and document procedures.
  • Monitor PICC and mid-lines, perform declotting, dressing changes, and discontinue catheters as needed.
  • Assist with difficult peripheral IV insertions.
  • Plan, evaluate, and implement interventions for solving IV-related patient care problems.
  • Provide IV instruction and information to nursing staff, students, physicians, patients, and their families.
  • Participate in research and quality improvement studies related to IV therapy.
  • Maintain an ongoing logbook of PICC insertion data.
  • Stay current on advances in IV therapy.
  • Perform initial and annual RN competency assessments.
  • Complete an educational course with theoretical and hands-on components in vascular access device insertion, including anatomy, physiology, care and maintenance, pharmacology, patient education, and complication management.
  • Initial clinical competency assessed by observing 5 successful insertions; annual competency assessed by observing 1 successful insertion.
  • Maintain competency by inserting several PICCs each month.
  • Participate in performance improvement data reviews, manufacturer information, and evidence-based practice.
  • Maintain performance, patient and employee satisfaction, and financial standards as outlined in performance evaluations.
  • Adhere to behavioral standards, including creating positive relationships with patients, families, coworkers, and colleagues.
  • Perform essential job functions safely for patients, visitors, and employees.
  • Identify and reduce unsafe practices to promote safety.
  • Use electronic mail, time and attendance software, learning management software, and intranet.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Current Alabama RN licensure.
  • Two years of clinical experience.
  • Demonstrated competency and proficiency in intravenous therapy.
  • Professional Infusion Nursing certification preferred.
  • Demonstrated positive relationships with co-workers and effective communication skills.
  • Ability to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.

Physical Requirements

  • Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 30 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly.
  • Tolerate prolonged periods of standing and walking.
  • Reach reasonable distances in any direction.
  • Stand, walk, kneel, bend, sit, and stoop.
  • Run in emergencies.
  • Exert maximum muscle force to lift, push, pull, and carry objects.
  • Coordinate finger movements and perceive temperature, texture, shape, and size with fingertips.
  • Perform duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Possess stamina to work prolonged shifts.
  • Hearing and vision must be normal or corrected to within normal range.
  • Physical presence onsite is essential.
