PRN Certified Sterile Processing Technician

About the Role

Responsible for the proper care and handling of all general and specialty instruments including the cleaning, decontamination, instrument identification, assembly, packaging and distribution, and sterilization of surgical instrumentation at Banner Surgery Center – Thunderbird, located on the Banner Thunderbird Medical Center Campus.

Responsibilities

• Decontaminates, assembles, and packages all instruments following established protocols, including performing necessary repairs, reassembling, and storing specialized surgical instruments.
• Prepares order requests for replacement parts for instruments and additional equipment as needed or upon physician request.
• Maintains a clean and safe environment by adhering to Standard Precautions and Infection Control practices, including donning proper PPE and following decontamination protocols per manufacturer Instructions for Use (IFU).
• Identifies instruments for all specialties and ensures proper function; follows protocol for repair or replacement of non-functioning instruments.
• Assembles and packages all instrumentation and sets according to department protocol.
• Operates steam autoclaves, ETO, and Gas Plasma sterilizers, utilizing equipment per manufacturer recommendations and hospital policy.
• Maintains logs and records relating to the sterilization process, including Ethylene Oxide Aeration Records, Sterilizer Load Records, and Biological Monitoring Records.
• Responds to problem calls from the Operating Room, performs preliminary investigations, and determines priority levels for instrumentation and equipment requests.
• Directs services competently and professionally, ensuring OR priorities are completed in a timely manner.
• Performs all functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory, and accreditation requirements, as well as applicable professional standards.
• Provides excellent service by consistently demonstrating core and leader behaviors.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• BLS certification required.
• Current national certification as a SPD Technician, Certified Registered Central Service Technician, or Surgical Instrument Processor, or relevant experience qualifying the candidate for the national certification exam.
• Mechanical aptitude with the ability to break down moving parts, clean, lubricate, reassemble, and problem-solve incomplete trays or missing instrumentation.
• Effective organizational, communication, and human relation skills.
