PRN Advanced Practice Professional- Emergency Medicine

WVUHS Medical Group and the Department of Emergency Medicine seeks a PRN Emergency Medicine Advanced Practice Professional to join our community emergency medicine practice at Thomas Memorial Hospital in South Charleston, West Virginia. About the Role

The Advanced Practice Professional (APP) provides comprehensive management of emergency medicine patients, including biological, social, and psychological assessments. The APP coordinates care with medical/surgical specialty teams, develops patient care plans, performs diagnostic/therapeutic procedures, and participates in discharge planning and education of residents and students. This role offers competitive private practice compensation with the mission and values of an academic health system.

Responsibilities

• Manages individualized care for emergency medicine patients and their families in the emergency department (DEM) and post-discharge settings.
• Coordinates hospitalization, pre-procedure evaluations, and integrated assessments.
• Orders additional tests or consults in collaboration with emergency medicine faculty or established clinical guidelines.
• Performs and communicates results of diagnostic tests within scope of practice.
• Consults with DEM clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal findings.
• Performs comprehensive clinical evaluations and documents findings in medical records.
• Facilitates patient discharge by coordinating follow-up services and tests.
• Develops individualized care plans, including teaching, discharge planning, and referrals.
• Demonstrates expertise in caring for patients across the age continuum.
• Identifies unstable or complex patient care situations and facilitates appropriate interventions.
• Evaluates patients and coordinates follow-up procedures or admissions.
• Assists in collecting outcome measures and participates in clinical trials or research studies.
• Utilizes critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning for clinical decision-making.
• Provides education to nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, and families.
• Documents care plans, interventions, and evaluations in compliance with hospital policies.
• Collaborates with leaders and staff to improve patient outcomes.
• Participates in inter-disciplinary approaches to care, program development, and education.
• Serves as a professional role model and promotes innovation in care delivery.
• Reviews and interprets emergency medicine data to recommend improvements.
• Other duties or projects as assigned.

Requirements

Nurse Practitioner

• Graduate of a CCNE-accredited nursing program with a Master’s Degree in Nursing.
• National Certification by a recognized APRN Certification Center.
• Licensure or eligibility for licensure as a Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia.
• American Heart Association BLS, ACLS, and ATLS certification required.
• Acute care or emergency medicine experience preferred; eligible new graduates considered.

Preferred Qualifications for Nurse Practitioner

• ACNP or FNP certification.
• American Heart Association PALS certification encouraged.

Physician Assistant

• Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree as a Medical/Surgical Physician Assistant.
• Graduate of an ARC-PA-approved Physician Assistant training program.
• Certification by the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants.
• Licensure or eligibility for licensure by the WV Board of Medicine or WV Board of Osteopathic Medicine.
• American Heart Association BLS, ACLS, and ATLS certification required.
• Acute care or emergency medicine experience preferred; eligible new graduates considered.

Preferred Qualifications for Physician Assistant

• Master’s level education as a Medical/Surgical Physician Assistant.
• American Heart Association PALS certification encouraged.

Skills
