About the Role

Peninsula Community Center, a ministry of Peninsula Covenant Church (PCC), builds community by providing personal, healthy, and meaningful connections through aquatics, fitness, tennis, and community programming. PCC is a vibrant and forward-thinking church located in Redwood City, dedicated to serving our community and making a positive impact through our outreach programs including our Community Center. PCC employs over 150 seasonal and part-time staff to support various community efforts. Our team thrives on flexibility, openness to change, and collaboration, with a shared passion for helping others and working together.

Principal Objective

The Private Swim Instructor is part of a collaborative and supportive aquatics team, working closely with the Aquatics Program Manager, Aquatics Coordinator, and fellow instructors. Instructors build positive relationships with swimmers, families, and PCC members while creating a fun, welcoming environment where every swimmer can succeed.

Principal Working Relationships

This position works closely with the Aquatics Program Manager, Aquatics Coordinator, and other swim instructors, as well as directly engaging with students and their families to ensure effective and enjoyable swim instruction. Collaboration with other Community Center teams is also essential to maintaining an excellent aquatics facility and program.

Workweek

  • Commit to a consistent schedule for a minimum of three months to provide continuity for swimmers and their families.
  • Flexible schedule of 2-8 hours per week, based on your availability and lesson demand.
  • We are currently looking for instructors with availability on weekends and weekday afternoons (before 4pm).
  • Attend all required trainings and team meetings.

Summary of Key Responsibilities

  • Teach engaging, individualized swim lessons that help swimmers build skills, confidence, and a love of the water.
  • Adapt instruction to meet each swimmer's age, ability, and goals while promoting water safety.
  • Build positive relationships with swimmers and families by providing encouragement, feedback, and progress updates.
  • Help maintain a safe, organized, and welcoming pool environment by following all facility policies, safety procedures, and the Emergency Action Plan (EAP).
  • Arrive prepared and ready to provide exceptional instruction for every lesson.
  • Communicate schedule changes promptly, assist with lesson coverage when possible, and work collaboratively with the aquatics team.
  • Represent PCC with professionalism, positivity, and a team-first attitude while helping create an outstanding experience for members and guests.
  • Support other duties that contribute to the success of the aquatics department and PCC's mission.

Profile Skills and Core Competencies

  • Passion for teaching swimmers of all ages and helping them build confidence in the water.
  • Positive, dependable teammate who creates a fun, encouraging learning environment.
  • Strong communication skills and a commitment to safety.

Experience & Education

  • American Red Cross Lifeguard certification required.
  • Must be at least 15 years old with strong swimming skills.
  • Prior swim team coaching and/or swim instructor experience preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be in the water and sun for extended periods.
  • Must be able to hold children (ages 3-12) in the water, stand in the water, swim 300 yards continuously (breaststroke or freestyle), and tread water for two minutes without using arms.
  • Must be able to perform all American Red Cross CPR skills.
  • Must be able to lift 30 pounds occasionally and 15-20 pounds frequently.
  • DOJ background clearance required.
  • Must adhere to and model PCC's Safe Church policies.
