About the role
This is an individual contributor role responsible for developing end-to-end solutions that address the full spectrum of transportation risk, and owning the Safety Management System (SMS) that governs how risk is identified, measured, controlled, and continuously improved.
Responsibilities
- Own the global transportation risk strategy, identifying systemic risks and developing mitigation roadmaps that balance operational velocity with safety outcomes.
- Serve as the enterprise SME for human factors and fatigue risk management, establishing standards, policies, and intervention frameworks grounded in scientific evidence.
- Design, implement, and continuously improve Safety Management Systems (SMS) aligned with industry best practices (e.g., ICAO SMS, ISO 39001, ANSI Z10).
- Leverage AI/ML and advanced data analytics to identify emerging risk patterns, predict incidents, and optimize resource allocation for risk reduction.
- Develop and scale both programmatic solutions (policies, training, behavioral programs) and technical solutions (technology interventions, engineering controls) across global operations.
- Build and maintain risk quantification models to measure residual risk, program effectiveness, and return on safety investment.
- Influence VP+ leadership through data-driven narratives, white papers, and risk briefings that drive resource allocation and strategic decision-making.
- Partner cross-functionally with Operations, Engineering, Legal, and Public Policy to embed risk management principles into new program launches and fleet expansion.
- Establish mechanisms to monitor regulatory trends and industry developments in transportation safety, proactively adapting Amazon's risk posture.
Qualifications
- 10+ years of risk management, audit, legal, compliance, operations, or a similar discipline experience.
- Experience with specific knowledge of human resource theory, functions and practice, performance appraisal systems and staff development.
- Experience in using statistical analysis to identify issues or opportunities for improvement.
- Experience influencing at all levels within an organization, particularly at the executive level.
- Bachelor's degree in Safety Science, Risk Management, or Engineering.
- Master's degree or PhD in Human Factors, Safety Science, Risk Management, or a related discipline preferred.
- Hands-on experience applying AI/ML tools to safety or risk problems (e.g., predictive analytics, NLP for incident analysis, computer vision).
- Certification in SMS (e.g., SMS Pro, ICAO SMS) or risk management (e.g., ISO 31000, ARM, CRMA).
- Experience in fleet safety, last-mile delivery, or heavy vehicle transportation environments.
- Familiarity with regulatory frameworks across multiple jurisdictions (DOT, DVSA, EU Mobility Package, NHVR).
