About the role
The Principal Trainer works with the training managers, clinical operations and business operations subject matter experts, and IT application analysts to develop and maintain a comprehensive, integrated training curriculum that ensures users can effectively, efficiently, and compliantly use Epic and corresponding applications to support clinical and business operations at UPMC.
Responsibilities
- Develop and refine training materials through a deep understanding of roles and their responsibilities.
- Train and develop a team of credentialed trainers.
- Continually assess the needs of the customer through collaboration and consultation.
- Manage the schedule of classes and class assignments.
- Identify and escalate concerns to minimize customer impact.
- Attends the outlined Epic education courses and passes certification as required.
- Create and maintain all training materials that meet the specific needs of different departments, specialties, and user groups, incorporating best practices and workflows into the training content.
- Maintain training records/attendance
- Conducts post-training tasks and activities to support end users and allows for troubleshooting issues and addressing questions.
- Masters the Epic application, third-party application, and UPMC-specific workflows by working closely with application teams, subject matter experts, and training leadership to ensure training aligns with system changes and operational and regulatory updates.
- Builds, tests, and maintains the training curriculum and training environment. Delivers ongoing training post-go live.
- Maintains and promotes open, positive, productive communication with inter- and intradepartmental management and staff of both internal and external customers.
- Assumes responsibility for managing the training team tasks outlined in the training project plan.
- Provides consultation related to information systems.
- Works with clinical and business operations leadership to develop training policies and requirements that align with UPMC policies and EHR guidelines.
Qualifications
- Capacity to manage multiple competing objectives and to communicate results in clear and unambiguous terms.
- Ability to lead others and clearly communicate the importance of training to all stakeholders in the project.
- Experience with adult education, instructional design, and curriculum delivery.
- Strong organizational and coordination skills.
- Ability to develop and adhere to time schedules in order to meet project deadlines and to sequence activities logically.
- Interpersonal skills at a level to function well in a wide range of administrative, management and patient care environments.
- Regular need to work effectively with wide range of very senior to very junior individuals under training project and ad hoc conditions.
- Ability to follow instructions, procedures, and assignments accurately within a set time frame and to function under stressful situations in a calm and rational manner.
- Knowledge of and the ability to use PC-based word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software to create teaching/learning materials and documentation.
- Excellent knowledge of the English grammar and spelling for use in both verbal and written communication.
- Bachelor’s degree in specialty or Education preferred.
- Experience with technology and/or healthcare is strongly desired.
- A proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel preferred.
- A detailed understanding of workflows and system configuration preferred.
- A strong belief in the value of the Epic installs preferred.
- The ability to write well is preferred.
- Clinical or operational experience preferred.
- Successful completion of Epic’s Principal Trainer Certification in assigned module(s) upon hire or within 90 days of hire is required.
- Able to work effectively with a wide range of individuals on training projects and within ad-hoc conditions.
- Attends the outlined Epic education courses and passes certification as required.

Preferred
- Experience designing interactive synchronous and asynchronous adult education for clinical staff.
- 2+ years working in Epic as a trainer or in a clinical role.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances
Epic Principal Trainer required within 90 days of Hire
