Principal Test Engineer - Opto-E
About the Role
Molex, with a rich heritage in the optical industry, provides high-performing and field-proven wavelength management solutions. We are rapidly growing in our Opto-E business, focusing on developing 1.6T, 3.2T, and beyond. As the only manufacturer in North America, this role will significantly impact our high-speed optical interconnects and company growth.
In our Fremont office, you will lead test development for high-speed fiber optic 800G/1.6T/3.2T transceiver characterization—from early prototypes and engineering samples through EVT/DVT testing to pilot production test definitions. You will collaborate closely with design authorities, hardware, and firmware teams to develop module calibration algorithms for transmitters and receivers.
Responsibilities
- Characterize devices and modules for next-generation optical transceivers used in AI/ML applications, including scale-out and scale-up networks.
- Build and strengthen transceiver characterization capabilities in the U.S. through test equipment selection, setup, DVT/EVT test, and calibration methodologies.
- Define module test specifications compliant with customer requirements, industry standards, and product lifecycle procedures.
- Design hardware and software for test platforms required during early engineering samples, EVT/DVT, and pilot production phases, balancing equipment costs, test scope, and test times.
- Collaborate with project managers and purchasing departments to ensure test systems meet project milestones and cost targets.
- Perform test data analysis and summarization for the development team to identify performance gaps.
- Provide test support for failure mode analysis during R&D and production phases.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- Minimum 3–7 years of experience in IMDD and coherent module characterizations.
- Experience with transceiver module Device Verification Testing (DVT).
- Hands-on experience with Vector Network Analyzer and Digital Sampling Oscilloscope.
- Experience with small signal frequency domain analysis, Continuous Time Linear Equalizer (CTLE), Feed Forward Equalization (FFE), and Digital Pre-emphasis.
- Test automation experience using Python scripts.
- Competency in data analysis and summarization using Python libraries, Excel, and JMP.
- Familiarity with 803.3xx standards and test methodologies for electrical host and optical line sides.
- Familiarity with CMIS (Common Management Interface Specification).
- Knowledge of PAM4 digital signal processors.
Preferred Qualifications
- Expertise in electro-optic devices such as EML, MZ modulators, and photodiodes characterization.
Pay
We anticipate paying $150,000 – $200,000 per year. This role is eligible for variable pay, issued as a monetary bonus or in another form.
