About the role
The System Safety / Human System Integration (HSI) Department at Raytheon ensures product safety by identifying hazards, assessing risks, and implementing solutions to protect people, hardware, and the environment. We are currently seeking Principal System Safety Engineers for onsite roles in Woburn, Tewksbury, Marlborough, Andover, MA, or Portsmouth, RI.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement MIL-STD-882E compliant system safety programs, including management, analysis, evaluation, and verification tasks
- Interpret system requirements, customer specifications, and military standards to recommend compliance strategies to program leadership
- Create and manage safety strategies, integrate tasks into the Program Integrated Master Schedule (IMS), and ensure compliance with contract and funding requirements
- Oversee safety budgets and execution, including Earned Value Management (EVM) and coordination with CAMs, IPTLs, and product owners
- Provide mentorship to early-career safety engineers
- Proactively engage in design change boards (e.g., engineering review boards, configuration control boards) to assess impacts on safety programs
- Coordinate and lead System Safety Working Groups with internal and external stakeholders, including government customers
- Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to identify and mitigate risks, ensure hazard elimination, and implement effective controls
- Conduct safety analyses of engineering designs, hardware, mechanical/electrical drawings, schematics, and system requirements to ensure fault tolerance and safety compliance
- Address safety-related interactions with suppliers and subcontractors
- Manage safety considerations across all lifecycle phases, including design, integration/testing, flight test, production, field operations, returns, demilitarization, and disposal
- Innovate and implement improved safety solutions and identify best practices to enhance the organization’s overall safety culture
Qualifications
- Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 8 years of prior relevant experience
- Experience developing and implementing MIL-STD-882E System Safety Program tasks and analyses
- Experience writing technical reports and presentations
- Experience with briefing safety status to safety approval authority at technical reviews, to safety review boards and/or to others as part of the safety approval process
- Experience managing or owning a safety program

- Competitive Salary Range: $107,500 - $204,500
