Location: Broomfield, CO

About the role

We are seeking a comprehensive systems engineering professional with a background in physics or engineering to guide a next-generation trapped-ion quantum computer through its entire lifecycle—from initial conceptualization and design through detailed development, rigorous validation, and product release. This role will facilitate cross-team collaboration, integrate technical insights, and maintain a holistic view of the project's technical scope, bridging the system's architectural vision with practical implementation. Candidates should expect to work in a fast-paced, team-based, and challenging technical environment where talent and initiative can thrive.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, define, and manage system requirements, specifications, and engineering documentation for a future generation trapped-ion quantum computer; track progress and compliance across multiple teams.
  • Create and execute the System Engineering Management Plan (SEMP) for a next-generation quantum computer.
  • Enable the cohesive design of a large next-generation quantum computer by defining the physical and functional breakdown between subsystems, defining interfaces, and writing interface control documents (ICDs).
  • Work with technical and program management teams to develop "right size" tools, change-management processes, version control, architecture documentation, and artifacts appropriate to the maturity of the technology.
  • Define, derive, organize, and communicate requirements for each quantum computer subsystem in collaboration with subsystem leads and other systems engineers.
  • Complete and document key design trade studies with subsystem leads, architects, and other systems engineers.
  • Track risk assessments and risk mitigation efforts.
  • Organize and conduct system design reviews, ensuring artifacts are updated and accessible.
  • Communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, ensuring clear understanding and buy-in.
  • Work closely with quantum physicists and electrical, optical, mechanical, and software engineers to align cross-functional goals.
  • Mentor junior engineers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree minimum.
  • 10+ years of experience in systems engineering, hardware design, system integration, or scientific R&D, inclusive of PhD or post-doctoral experience.
  • 2+ years of experience in a systems engineering role.
  • Must be a U.S. Person defined as a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or green card holder, workers granted asylum or refugee status.
  • Due to national security requirements, candidates must not be a People's Republic of China national or Russian national unless the candidate is also a U.S. citizen.

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree/Ph.D. in Physics, Engineering, or related technical field preferred.
  • Proven experience in system engineering or system architecture of highly complex, large-scale technologies (e.g., quantum computers, atomic clocks, spacecraft, semiconductor manufacturing equipment, or other multidisciplinary hardware systems).
  • Experience deconstructing highly complex systems into clear and comprehensible constituent pieces and work packages.
  • Strong background in requirements engineering, system verification, and validation processes.
  • Familiarity with Model Based System Engineering (MBSE).
  • Prior experience with laser-cooled, neutral atom, or atomic ion scientific apparatus or quantum computers.
  • Prior experience with complex laser systems incorporating electro-optic and/or acousto-optic modulators.
  • Knowledge of cryogenic systems and/or optical systems.
  • Experience leading multi-disciplinary teams integrating mechanical, electrical, and software subsystems.
  • Proficiency in system modeling, simulations, and analysis tools.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Experience with Python, MATLAB, C++, or related languages.
  • Ability to build strong relationships and effectively partner with others.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Pay

The pay range for this role is $180,000 – $225,000 annually. Actual compensation within this range may vary based on the candidate's skills, educational background, professional experience, and unique qualifications for the role. This range is inclusive of bonus target.

Benefits

  • Flexible work schedule.
  • Employer-subsidized health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • 401(k) match for student loan repayment benefit.
  • Equity, 401k retirement savings plan.
  • 12 paid holidays and generous vacation + sick time.
  • Paid parental leave.
  • Employee discounts.
