About the role

Surgical technologists are allied health professionals who are an integral part of the team of medical practitioners providing surgical care to patients in a variety of settings. The surgical technologist works under medical supervision to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures. This individual works under the supervision of a surgeon to ensure that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions appropriately, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • Two (2) years of scrub tech work experience working with pediatric patients in a Level 1 or Level 2 Trauma Main Operating Room
  • Certification in Surgical Technologist (CST) by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or Certification as a Tech in Surgery (TS-C) by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
  • CPR certification must be obtained within 30 days of date of hire
  • Successful completion of surgical technology training from an accredited program
  • Laser Safety Certification must be obtained within 1 year of hire
  • High School Diploma or equivalent work experience and/or training
  • Demonstrates all competencies required for the Level II surgical technologists
  • Demonstrates superior knowledge and practice of patient care techniques
  • Demonstrates superior knowledge of aseptic and surgical technique
  • Demonstrates superior knowledge and practice in the role of the first scrub
  • Demonstrates superior knowledge related to OR emergency situations
  • Demonstrates advanced knowledge in three or more pediatric surgical specialty areas and is regarded widely by staff to be a subject matter expert in these areas

  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of principles of and practices of asepsis/sterile techniques, instrumentation, supplies, and equipment usage and processing in assigned specialty
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of common major surgical procedures for major surgical services
  • Advanced knowledge of emergent and routinely used equipment
  • Advanced knowledge of handling delicate equipment and instruments
  • Knowledge and understanding of Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) recommended practices
  • Knowledge and understanding of department and hospital policy and procedures
  • Knowledge of conducting Quality Assurance monitors pertinent to assigned area and practice
  • Knowledge of handling infectious waste and hazardous substances (chemicals used for cleaning, sanitation, disinfection and sterilization)
  • Ability to prioritize assigned duties
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal communication and relationships with coworkers
  • Ability to cope during stressful situations and working in a highly paced environment including dealing with surgical emergencies
  • Ability to set priorities, organize work independently and for others
