Principal / Sr. Electrical Engineer - Studies
Position Summary
Our client is an industry-leading engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) organization looking for a Principal Electrical Engineer who will play a foundational role in building and leading a high-performing engineering organization focused on utility-scale solar and energy storage projects. This is a foundational leadership opportunity for an experienced engineer who combines deep technical expertise with a passion for building organizations, developing engineering standards, and mentoring future technical leaders.
Essential Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Power System Analysis
- Perform and oversee technical studies including short circuit analysis, protective device coordination, arc flash studies, load flow analysis, grounding system analysis, equipment duty evaluations, harmonic analysis (as required), and dynamic and transient system studies (where applicable)
- Evaluate system performance, reliability, safety, and code compliance while identifying opportunities to improve overall project design
- Serve as technical authority on study assumptions, methodologies, modeling accuracy, and engineering recommendations
Engineering Standards & Continuous Improvement
- Develop standardized methodologies, templates, calculation packages, and quality procedures for electrical system studies
- Establish engineering best practices for modeling, documentation, review, and technical validation
- Maintain expertise in applicable utility requirements, interconnection standards, and electrical codes including NEC, IEEE, ANSI, NESC, NEMA, and applicable utility criteria
Project Support & Technical Consulting
- Provide technical recommendations that influence equipment selection, system architecture, protection schemes, and overall project design
- Support interconnection activities by preparing or reviewing utility-required engineering analyses and technical documentation
- Aid project teams in resolving technical issues, field modifications, Requests for Information (RFIs), and engineering deviations
- Provide technical guidance during commissioning activities and troubleshooting when required
Leadership & Team Development
- Mentor electrical engineers and engineering specialists in power system modeling, study development, and technical analysis
- Provide technical oversight and quality review of engineering calculations and study deliverables
- Help establish scalable engineering processes and contribute to the long-term growth of the electrical engineering organization
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner closely with Electrical Design, Civil, Structural, SCADA / Controls, High Voltage, Construction, Procurement, and Project Management teams to ensure study results are effectively incorporated into project designs
- Collaborate with Preconstruction teams by supporting conceptual engineering, utility coordination, project feasibility assessments, and technical risk evaluations
- Interface directly with clients, utilities, consultants, equipment manufacturers, and regulatory agencies as the organization's electrical studies subject matter expert
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or electrical Power Engineering
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in at least one U.S. state
- 10+ years of electrical engineering experience with significant experience supporting utility-scale solar, renewable energy, transmission, or power generation projects
- Demonstrated experience performing and reviewing complex power system studies for utility-scale electrical infrastructure
- Strong expertise in short circuit analysis, protective device coordination, arc flash analysis, load flow studies, and grounding system design
- Proficiency with industry-standard power system analysis software such as ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, PSCAD, CYME, or equivalent
- Strong knowledge of NEC, IEEE, ANSI, NEMA, NESC, and utility interconnection standards
- Experience leading technical engineering teams and mentoring engineers
