Principal Software Engineer
About the role
Motion is building the first end-to-end agentic work suite for everyday businesses. Our platform already powers project management, documents, sheets, calendars, meetings, knowledge, and communication. We are now layering in AI Employees that can autonomously execute work across all of it.
Responsibilities
- Make key technical decisions and implement large software projects to help Motion scale the next 2 orders of magnitude.
- Work on Motion's highest impact projects and have ownership over major parts of the product code.
- Be ambitious and always look for ways to improve. Take ownership of projects and lead them to completion while dealing with ambiguity and finding the right balance between speed and quality.
- Be a fast learner and quickly familiarize yourself with a complex product and code base. Be comfortable with the fact that working in a startup means working around tech debt.
- Create the most impact by focusing on solving the biggest customer problems rather than just the coolest technical challenges.
- Collaborate effectively with other talented engineers and work well in an environment where the best ideas win.
Requirements
- Familiarity with the Javascript ecosystem and ability to hit the ground running with our technologies (Typescript, Node.js, React, React Query, NestJS, Postgres, Temporal).
- Experience in software engineering, preferably in full-stack development.
- Ambitious and driven to take on significant responsibilities.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.
Qualifications
- At least 6+ years of relevant experience in software engineering.
- A proven track record of delivering high-quality software projects.
- A strong understanding of how to create the most impact and not get lost in the weeds in details that don't matter.
- Experience with AI and automation in work management platforms is a plus.
Skills
- Strong programming skills in JavaScript, TypeScript, and related frameworks.
- Experience with Node.js, React, NestJS, and Postgres.
- Understanding of AI and automation in work management platforms.
- Excellent collaboration and communication skills.

Pay
Base Salary: $270,000 - $375,000
Bonus: $0 - $150,000
Total Compensation: $504,000 - $965,000 (includes equity & bonus)
