Principal Software Engineer

We are seeking a Principal Software Engineer to join a team building a suite of microservices that provide near real‑time insights over data in Microsoft Agent 365. The team tackles complex, large‑scale problems with a focus on impeccable quality while advancing Microsoft’s mission to empower every person and every organization on the planet.
Responsibilities
- Leads efforts on using debugging tools, tests, logs, telemetry, and other methods, and proactively verifies assumptions while developing code before issues occur across products in production; leverages minimal telemetry data, triangulates issues, and resolves with minimal iterations.
- Leads incident retrospectives to identify root causes, implements repair actions, and defines mechanisms to prevent recurrence.
- Proactively applies least‑access principles, uses logging, telemetry, and other appropriate mechanisms to investigate issues while retaining privacy and security, and drives those practices across the team.
- Applies and shares best practices for building code based on well‑established methods and secure design principles, while also establishing best practices for new code development and formal validation of security invariants.
- Leads product development and scaling to meet customer requirements, applying best practices for performance, scalability, and security promises.
- Leads experiments that determine the impact of changes using feature flags/flighting, interprets results, and decides on next steps or ship decisions.
- Drives identification of appropriate metrics for experimentation to improve customer value.
- Drives collaboration with internal partners (e.g., Data Science, product managers) to incorporate success and guard‑rail metrics for experimentation.
- Embodies Microsoft’s culture and values.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years of technical engineering experience with coding in languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python, or equivalent experience.
- Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements, including the Microsoft Cloud background check (required upon hire/transfer and every two years).
Preferred
- Master’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years of technical engineering experience with coding in languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 12+ years of technical engineering experience with coding in languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python, or equivalent experience.
Pay
The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is $142,800 – $274,800 per year. In the San Francisco Bay Area and New York City metropolitan area, the range is $188,000 – $304,200 per year. Certain roles may be eligible for additional benefits and compensation.
