Full-time

As a principal software engineer at Liberty Mutual, you'll consult on highly complex projects and solve technical problems while working in an agile environment. Join the Workflow & Automation squad, which powers Bridgeway, a Micro Frontend platform that enables rapid, scalable React application development and onboarding of rep-facing experiences. In this role, you'll shape mission-critical systems and lead a motivated team of engineers solving complex, high-impact problems. This is a hybrid role requiring two days in the office per week in one of five tech hubs: Columbus, Plano, Indianapolis, Boston, and Portsmouth. U.S.-based role only.

What You'll Do

  • Design, build, and integrate full-stack solutions using JavaScript/TypeScript, React, Node.js, Next.js, and/or Java.
  • Build and execute AI-driven workflows.
  • Drive the Micro Frontend (MFE) strategy, rapidly onboarding React apps into the Bridgeway MFE platform.
  • Develop a deep understanding of upstream and downstream systems to maintain end-to-end data quality, proactively identifying risks, resolving root causes, and preventing data-induced defects.
  • Break down ambiguous technical problems, identify root causes across complex systems, and deliver incremental improvements with clear milestones.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners across product, design, platform, security, and data to ensure system accuracy, streamline interactions, and drive continuous improvements to reliability, performance, and customer experience.
  • Establish and champion engineering best practices, mentor engineers, and drive measurable improvements across SCORP engineering excellence pillars.

Qualifications

  • Eight or more years of software engineering experience.
  • A strong background in business operations and strategies, including knowledge of global business, technology trends, and the financial services industry.
  • Hands-on involvement with layered systems architectures, designs, and shared software concepts; working knowledge of contemporary frameworks and emerging technologies.
  • Familiarity with functional and system integration testing, a history of practicing DevOps and SecOps.
  • Experience working in an agile environment.

Technical Skills

  • Strong enterprise architecture and technical leadership skills, with the ability to make architectural decisions that promote scalability, resilience, maintainability, and long-term evolution.
  • Strong experience in distributed systems, event-driven architectures, API design, microservices, integration patterns, and distributed computing for high-throughput applications.
  • Proficiency in cloud-hosted and modern web application development using Node.js, React, TypeScript, HTML/CSS, Micro Frontends, and contemporary JavaScript frameworks; working knowledge of Java.
  • Experience building and optimizing cloud-native platforms using modern cloud services (preferably AWS), CDK, DevOps practices, GitHub Actions or equivalent CI/CD platforms, and infrastructure automation.
  • Strong database and data engineering skills, including relational database design, data modeling, large-scale data ingestion, cloud-scale data management, governance, performance tuning, and scalability.
  • Deep understanding of application and platform security, including authentication, authorization (OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect), secure coding practices, and OWASP Top 10 principles.
  • Expertise in engineering quality practices, including design thinking, test-driven development, automated testing with Playwright, performance testing with JMeter (or equivalent), and rigorous code review processes.
  • Experience implementing observability and operational excellence practices using Datadog, Splunk, monitoring, diagnostics, and reliability engineering methodologies.
  • Experience building and implementing solutions leveraging Generative AI, Agentic workflows, workflow automation, and intelligent process orchestration capabilities to improve engineering productivity and business outcomes.

Leadership & Professional Skills

  • Strong negotiation, facilitation, and influence skills, with the ability to align diverse stakeholders and drive consensus-based outcomes.
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to identify systemic issues, recognize cross-team dependencies, and translate ambiguity into actionable solutions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts and collaborate effectively across technical and non-technical teams.
  • Demonstrated adaptability, resilience, continuous learning, mentorship, and a commitment to fostering innovation and building high-performing engineering teams.
