About the role
As a Principal Software Engineer at Global‑e you will design and deliver the core services behind our global logistics platform. You will drive innovation within our API‑first microservice architecture built on Scala, Kubernetes, and AWS. Working with cross‑functional teams you will design and implement robust distributed systems that handle millions of transactions, shaping global logistics capabilities for merchants worldwide and elevating the technical bar for the organization. The role reports to the Engineering Manager and is based in Hoboken, NJ or Dublin, Ireland.
Responsibilities
- Lead the design, development, and deployment of new capabilities across logistics (fulfillment, labels, tracking) and order‑management workflows.
- Define, communicate, and guide architectural decisions to ensure scalability and reliability.
- Champion clean code, best practices, and robust testing frameworks, pushing the team toward technical excellence.
- Propose and implement features, tooling, and infrastructure that support exponential growth and operational efficiency.
- Employ rigorous verification approaches to meet critical metrics and SLAs, ensuring stable, high‑performing systems.
- Balance rapid, iterative release cycles with safety through CI/CD pipelines, effective monitoring, and efficient processes.
- Collaborate closely with other engineering teams, product managers, and stakeholders to ensure alignment and share expertise.
- Contribute high‑quality Scala code (no prior Scala experience required; passion for learning and functional programming is valued).
Requirements
- 7+ years of experience building large‑scale, customer‑facing applications in fast‑paced environments (e‑commerce, fintech, tech startups a plus).
- Expertise in designing, deploying, and operating resilient, fault‑tolerant distributed systems that handle high traffic.
- Proficiency with Agile methodologies, CI/CD pipelines, and rapid release cycles.
- Strong database skills with the ability to optimize and scale applications involving complex data interactions.
