About the role

The Catastrophe Engineering and Analytics (CAT E&A) team is seeking a Data Scientist / Senior Data Scientist to apply cutting-edge data science techniques that enhance our view of risk across multiple perils. You will collaborate with domain experts to develop models for natural catastrophes, hazards, building vulnerability, and man-made risks (e.g., cyber, casualty). Responsibilities include evaluating vendor models, researching internal risk perspectives, consulting on account-specific analyses, and building tools to support underwriting decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and develop insights from large, diverse datasets including claims, hazard models, structural analysis, geospatial sources, and public/proprietary data.
  • Develop and maintain expertise in advanced data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence techniques for risk assessment.
  • Collaborate with domain experts across teams and perils to enhance data utilization.
  • Propose and execute innovative solutions to insurance challenges that directly impact BHSI underwriting decisions.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. or M.S. in data science, civil engineering, atmospheric science, actuarial science, computer science, mathematics, or a related field.
  • 3–6 years of industry experience (required for Senior Data Scientist level).
  • Advanced knowledge of probability theory, statistics, and machine learning methods.
  • Experience in insurance, catastrophe model development, cyber/casualty risk modeling, or exposure data collection (preferred).
  • Experience applying statistical techniques and machine learning to large datasets, particularly in structural performance, natural hazards, geospatial data, or insurance claims.
  • Familiarity with large language models (LLMs), retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and their applications (a plus).
  • Strong programming skills in Python (preferred), R, and SQL.
  • Experience with relational/non-relational databases and git-based version control.
  • Experience with Databricks or other cloud-based analytics platforms (preferred).
  • Highly motivated, detail-oriented, and collaborative team player.

Pay

The base salary range for this position in Atlanta, GA, Boston, MA, or San Ramon, CA is $100,000 to $160,000, with annual bonus eligibility. Total compensation is determined by skills, location, and experience.
