This role sits within JLG’s Global Product Development team, focusing on Reliability, Regulatory, and Functional Safety for Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs) and Telescopic Material Handlers (TMHs).

About the role

As Principal Reliability and Functional Safety Engineer, you will interpret, plan, and execute Reliability, Regulatory, and Functional Safety requirements. Your expertise in component and system validation, hazard identification, risk assessments, safety system analysis, and machine controls will drive compliance and performance across JLG’s product lines.

Responsibilities

  • Review and provide input to Engineering Systems, Design, Test, and Software documentation consistent with project phase, including requirements development, design and performance verification, and test plan development.
  • Enforce proper use of engineering criteria and internal Reliability & Safety standards, ensuring programs define and collect evidence to meet established requirements.
  • Participate in the development of test procedures to verify Reliability & Safety requirements.
  • Collect and analyze field duty cycle data as input to validation activities.
  • Assess safety hazards, regulatory impact, reliability characteristics, and trade-offs of machine components and subsystems, including vehicle layouts, block diagrams, bills of material, and drawings/schematics.
  • Conduct and document risk assessment studies and analysis of changes/issues affecting Safety, Compliance, and Reliability.
  • Perform analysis of Safety-Related Parts of Control Systems per EN 13849-1 and IEC 62061.
  • Construct and submit Technical Construction Files for European and Australian product certification.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  • 8+ years of RMMR (Reliability, Maintenance & Managing Risk) experience.

Skills

  • Strong mechanical knowledge of construction/mobile machinery vehicles and related systems.
  • Working knowledge of electronic and hydraulic machine control systems.
  • Familiarity with component, system, software, and hardware design, verification, and validation processes.
  • Proficiency in Hazard Analysis, Risk Assessment, Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and similar methodologies.
  • Knowledge of applying EN ISO 13849 and IEC/EN 62061 to Safety System Analysis.
  • Experience with hazard identification and risk assessment based on EN ISO 12100.
  • Familiarity with global standards:
    • EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC & Machinery Regulation MR1230/2023.
    • Global MEWP Standards: ANSI 92.20, EN280-1, CSA B354.6, AS/NZS 1418.10.
    • Global TMH Standards: B56.6, EN1459-1, AS 10896.1.
  • Ability to travel for jobsite visits and customer meetings.

Pay

Pay range: $82,900.00 – $134,300.00. Individual pay is determined by factors including the scope and responsibilities of the role, candidate’s experience, education, skills, and equity among team members in similar positions.
