About the Role

Manage complex transmission, substation, distribution, gas, and/or information technology projects involving cross-functional teams, multiple disciplines, and operating areas, including contract resources. Responsible for managing scope, schedule, budget, and safety performance of multiple projects and programs, typically ranging from $1 million to $60 million. Lead project teams through business case approval, project planning, execution, and closeout. May also manage high-profile business initiatives with direct accountability for execution under tight deadlines and limited resources.

Position may require extended hours during storms or energy delivery emergencies.

Responsibilities

  • Manage large, complex, and often unique projects using established project management principles and techniques.
  • Deliver projects on time and at or below budget.
  • Serve as the key interface for external customer work, including transmission and substation projects, presenting billable costs, and negotiating schedules.
  • Collaborate with other project managers, work management, and functional managers to optimize resource utilization.
  • Communicate with project sponsors and key stakeholders on project issues, including executive-level presentations.
  • Acquire and manage contract resources: participate in contractor selection, prepare contract requisitions, approve change orders, authorize contract payments, and evaluate contractor performance.
  • Lead and coach team members to improve performance and meet expectations; mentor less experienced colleagues.
  • Acquire zoning variations and permits for large projects by presenting project details to city zoning boards and public hearings.
  • Perform backup role for Manager Project Management.
  • Ensure completion of business cases, budgetary approvals, project scheduling, requirements engineering, design and engineering tasks, vegetation management reviews, project reporting, financial analysis, major equipment procurement, environmental analysis, real estate acquisition, and relationship management with large customers, vendors, townships, and regulatory agencies.
  • Conduct project quality assurance and change management.
  • Interact routinely with key internal and external stakeholders, including senior management, large customers, and governmental/regulatory officials.
  • Manage multiple projects of complex, large scope and budget with minimal supervision.

Requirements

  • For construction project management: Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field and 7–10 years of relevant project management experience, OR 9–12 years of relevant project management experience in lieu of a degree.
  • For non-construction project management: Bachelor’s degree in business, engineering, or related field and 7–10 years of relevant project management experience, OR 9–12 years of relevant project management experience in lieu of a degree.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or ability to achieve PMP within two years of job entry.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in managing large, complex projects using project management techniques, including:
    • Planning and Control (product/work breakdown structures, critical path analysis, scope control).
    • Issue and Risk Management (identification, assessment, and contingency planning).
    • Project Management Tools (planning, scheduling, resource balancing, cost monitoring).
    • Business Case Development (cost/benefit evaluations, net present value analysis).
    • Progress Reporting (cost/schedule curves, project status reports, earned value analysis).
  • Proven leadership ability in a high-performance culture.
  • Demonstrated ability to build consensus, communicate effectively, engage others, and hold people accountable.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to an automobile.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3–5 years of supervisory experience (manager roles).
  • Master’s degree in engineering (or advanced technical degree) or Business Administration.
  • Professional Engineer License.
  • Experience or knowledge in utility design, planning, or construction.
