Principal Product Manager, Telemetry Collection - Observability
About the role
The Observability team develops solutions for application developers and engineers running infrastructure and services. Elasticsearch serves as an efficient datastore for logs, metrics, and application traces, supporting the three pillars of observability. The team builds and maintains turnkey solutions like APM, Infrastructure Monitoring, Logs, and Uptime to derive insights from this data. As a Principal Product Manager for Telemetry collection, you will drive the strategy and execution for edge telemetry collectors and remote management capabilities, owning the vision for Fleet Server, Elastic Agent, the Elastic Distribution of OpenTelemetry (EDOT), and classic standalone log shippers like Filebeat, Beats, and Logstash.
Responsibilities
- Define the product vision, go-to-market strategy, and execution roadmap for the Elastic Agent framework, Fleet Server/Service, and telemetry collectors.
- Define and track KPIs focused on agent deployment success, pipeline efficiency, and adoption of OTel distributions.
- Oversee the packaging, testing, and distribution of the Elastic Agent, including the Elastic Distribution for OpenTelemetry Collector (EDOT) and standalone, purpose-specific distributions.
- Drive remote management capabilities for Elastic Agent, Fleet Server, and collector infrastructure to ensure smooth deployment, configuration, and control at scale.
- Drive the vision and release strategy for cloud-native deployments, focusing on Kubernetes operators and Helm Charts for seamless provisioning and lifecycle management.
- Advance OTel as a primary data shipper, guiding development of receivers and exporters across Elastic Agent (EDOT) and the upstream OpenTelemetry Collector project.
- Manage Filebeat (as an Elastic Agent–managed OTel receiver or standalone binary) and oversee maintenance of the Beats repository.
- Lead product initiatives for Logstash to improve supportability, performance, and customer-requested enhancements.
- Work closely with engineering, UX, and product marketing to deliver compelling central management and collector experiences.
- Act as a key spokesperson for Elastic’s agent framework, collector ecosystem, and collection capabilities at internal and external events.
Requirements
- Minimum five years in a Product Management role with a focus on enterprise infrastructure observability, telemetry collection, or agent frameworks.
- Deep technical familiarity with collectors, log shippers, and agent ecosystems such as OpenTelemetry Collector, Elastic Agent, Filebeat/Beats, and Logstash.
- Proven track record defining requirements for remote agent management, fleet control planes, or distributed edge collection systems.
- Familiarity with Kubernetes operators and Helm Charts, alongside cloud-native orchestration and release management.
- Previous experience in IT Ops, DevOps, SRE, or as a customer-facing solution architect/consultant is ideal.
- Expertise in OpenTelemetry standards, receivers/exporters, and OpenTelemetry Collector architectures.
- Experience working with open-source communities and balancing upstream contributions with enterprise product requirements.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical architectures into clear business goals.
- Familiarity with modern AI productivity tools and emerging AI technology stacks and telemetry requirements.
- Ability to work effectively in a globally distributed team.
