Principal Product Engineer

About the role
Perform engineering work in Product Engineering including New Product Development (NPD), Research and Development (R&D) and Custom Products along with Production, Supplier or Field Service support. Use direction from organization strategies and objectives to meet customer needs. Demonstrate strong subject matter expertise (SME) and provide technical leadership to the engineering community.

Responsibilities
- Communicate effectively on engineering issues, comprehending and conveying complex technical matters to a variety of audiences.
- Maintain positive working relationships with cross-functional team members and other stakeholders.
- Lead by example, demonstrating robust critical thinking skills; challenge, support, and develop other engineers while accepting challenge willingly.
- Be the technical authority on engineering projects and own technical decisions.
- Lead and/or contribute to engineering projects aimed at improving product cost, quality, robustness, and delivery with a strong customer focus.
- Responsible for new product development in the following areas:
- Hydraulic – design and analysis of high-pressure components and systems
- Mechanical – design and analysis of components, structures, and systems for tools
- Aerospace – design of tools to aid in assembly and inspection of aerospace systems
- Utilize engineering principles and tools while adhering to the NPD process, ensuring products meet market expectations before release.
- Basic awareness of electrical components and controls.
- Make significant contributions to Segment/Product and Technology roadmaps.
- Address and resolve production and customer problems related to product design.
- Responsible for quality improvement and cost reduction of assigned products; share responsibility for meeting departmental cost reduction goals.
- Work closely with Product Groups to capture new business, contribute to technical requirements, and develop new product concepts.
- Act as a resource and sounding board, offering technical expertise to stakeholders inside and outside engineering.
- Develop technology partnerships to acquire competencies critical to achieving a competitive advantage.
Requirements
- Ability to support multiple concurrent projects independently in a team environment.
- Proficient organizational, written, oral, and professional communication skills.
- Computer skills in Microsoft Office; CREO, FEA, and/or CFD/AMEsim experience a plus.
- Understanding of mechanical components with the ability to apply knowledge to product design; industrial hydraulics and specifically pump and valve experience a plus.
- Understanding of various manufacturing processes including molded metal and plastic parts, machined components, welded assemblies, and additive manufacturing.
- Stay informed on industry trends and investigate ways to improve Enerpac products, bringing in new technologies to the industrial tool space.
- Hold yourself and others accountable for project timelines; manage multiple projects while focusing on high-priority tasks and adjusting to changes in the product roadmap.
- Ability to share ideas with others, including non-technical audiences, and influence the team through one-on-one and large group communication.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's of Science in Engineering (Master’s Degree in Engineering is a plus).
- Demonstrable experience in a technical authority role, having taken ownership of product decisions, trade-offs, and specifications.
- Ability to comprehend and communicate complex technical matters to a variety of audiences.
- Demonstrated technical aptitude and strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Track record of collaboration with cross-functional departments and teams.
Physical Demands
- May need to lift documents/work materials up to 30 pounds in weight.
- Able to walk/climb to a variety of primary work locations, including traveling by air/auto to remote sites.
- Must be able to listen, understand, and speak with team members in person, telephonically, and electronically at all levels within a diverse workforce and with supported organizations.
- Able to work in front of a personal computer and telephone for long periods of time.
Work Environment
Primary work environment is a temperature-controlled office setting but may also include visits to different manufacturing facilities where following appropriate safety protocols at the location would be required. Employee will be exposed to low levels of noise in an office.
