About the role
The Principal Platform Engineer will be part of a small, senior engineering team working on a critical legacy system. The role involves building agents that modernize and translate a decades-old codebase, with executive backing and direct user feedback.
Responsibilities
- Own the architectural shape of the platform on commercial AWS, including VPC, managed PostgreSQL, serverless compute, object storage, observability, CI/CD, and defined as code.
- Ensure security and compliance by integrating federal identity standards (SSO, smart-card, federated identity) and implementing encryption, audit logging, and data residency primitives.
- Ensure architectural portability for easy transition to regulated or restricted environments.
- Improve internal developer experience by optimizing logs, traces, and deploy speed within the local development loop.
- Partner with downstream deployment teams to facilitate the transition of the platform into restricted environments.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, with 10+ years of professional infrastructure or platform engineering experience.
- Experience owning production systems, including handling outages, audits, and debugging complex issues.
- Proven ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
- Extensive experience with production cloud platforms, particularly AWS.
- Strong hands-on skills in infrastructure-as-code (CDK or Terraform).
- Experience with identity and access management, including SAML/OIDC, federated identity, and identity abstraction patterns.
- Experience translating regulatory pressures into concrete infrastructure decisions.
- Experience designing for portability across different environments.
- Native use of AI tooling, such as agents in parallel and models as collaborators.
- Strong observability practices, including logs, traces, and deploy speed.
- Experience in a remote work environment.
Qualifications
- GovCloud, FedRAMP, or restricted-environment deployment experience.
- Multi-tenant SaaS architecture experience.
- Sovereign cloud, on-prem, or air-gapped deployments experience.
- Accreditation experience, including driving or contributing to a federal authorization.
- HIPAA/HITECH operational experience.
- Open-source contributions in the platform, infrastructure-as-code, or identity space.
Skills
- Native use of AI tooling: agents in parallel, model as collaborator.
- Strong observability discipline: logs, traces, deploy speed, the local dev loop.
- Hands-on AWS depth.
- Decades of experience in production cloud platforms.
- Experience with identity and access management.
- Experience with regulatory compliance and accreditation.
- Experience with multi-tenant SaaS architectures.
- Experience with sovereign clouds and on-prem deployments.
- Experience with open-source contributions.
