About the Role

Keys to success in this role include technical leadership, priority clarification, and project management support within the mechanical engineering function. The Principal Mechanical Engineer will ensure the team focuses on the right challenges at the right time while allocating resources effectively. This role also involves mentoring and coaching other engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical design and development for Myomo’s wearable robotic orthotic systems, driving innovation in lightweight structures, actuation integration, and human-robot interaction.
  • Optimize designs for durability, performance, manufacturability, and regulatory compliance, emphasizing scalability and design for manufacturability (DFM).
  • Lead and facilitate rigorous design reviews, fostering a culture of technical excellence and accountability.
  • Mentor and coach engineers to promote a high-performance design and development environment.
  • Prioritize comfort, weight optimization, adjustability, and long-term wearability in designs, incorporating clinician and patient feedback into iterative improvements.
  • Clarify project priorities, allocate resources, and manage timelines to meet product development milestones.
  • Ensure compliance within a medical device design controls environment, supporting verification and validation (V&V) and production improvement processes.
  • Partner with Manufacturing to support design transfer and production scale-up.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering; an advanced degree is a plus.
  • 8–15+ years of experience in a design engineering role, including coaching and guiding junior team members.
  • Experience designing mechanisms for automation, complex electro-mechanical systems, or high-precision mechanical solutions.
  • Experience with wearables, medical device robotics/controls, or design controls is a plus.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Ability to meet deadlines within specified time constraints.
