Principal Investigator – Archaeology (Texas)

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as Principal Investigator for archaeological surveys, testing, data recovery, and monitoring projects
  • Develop research designs, scopes of work, budgets, and schedules
  • Lead field teams and ensure compliance with safety and quality standards
  • Provide technical oversight for artifact analysis, site documentation, and reporting
  • Prepare and manage Texas Antiquities Permit applications
  • Cookordinate with the Texas Historical Commission, TxDOT-ENV, federal agencies, and tribal representatives
  • Ensure all work meets state and federal cultural resource requirements
  • Author or oversee high-quality technical reports, research designs, and permit documents
  • Review and approve site forms, GIS data, and artifact cataloging
  • Present findings to clients, agencies, and stakeholders
  • Support proposal development and client outreach
  • Identify new opportunities and contribute to strategic growth in the Texas market
  • Mentor junior archaeologists and field staff
  • Provide training in field methods, compliance requirements, and reporting standards

Requirements

  • Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Archaeology, Anthropology, or related field
  • Meets Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualification Standards for Archaeology
  • Minimum 10 years of professional archaeological experience, including supervisory roles
  • Demonstrated experience serving as PI on projects in Texas
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • Texas prehistoric and historic archaeology
    • Texas Antiquities Code and THC permitting
    • Section 106 compliance

Skills

  • Proven ability to write and manage technical reports
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel frequently
  • Experience with large-scale linear projects (transportation, utilities, pipelines)
  • Familiarity with GIS applications and digital field data collection
  • Established relationships with Texas agencies and tribal nations
  • Experience managing multi-disciplinary cultural resources teams
  • Ability to work outdoors in Texas weather conditions
  • Ability to walk long distances, carry equipment, and perform field tasks as needed
  • Willingness to travel for extended field assignments
