Principal Forward Deployed Engineer
Unity is hiring a Principal Forward Deployed Engineer to embed with departments across the company and transform how they work using AI, agents, and automated workflows. You will sit inside Engineering but spend most of your time embedded with partner functions—Finance, Legal, Marketing, People, Operations, and more—learning how work gets done today and building solutions to make it faster, more reliable, and less manual.
Responsibilities
- Embed with a partner department to deeply understand their workflows, decision points, systems, and unwritten rules, identifying where AI can add value.
- Design, build, and ship agents and automated workflows that solve real problems—replacing manual work, unblocking bottlenecks, and surfacing buried information.
- Write production-grade code across the stack: integrations, services, data pipelines, agent logic, and internal UIs.
- Connect the department’s systems (SaaS tools, internal services, data warehouse, communication channels) and build missing integrations.
- Run evaluations before deployment and instrument solutions to ensure long-term trustworthiness.
- Partner with department leadership to determine what to automate, augment, or leave alone, presenting real tradeoffs rather than pitches.
- Bring learnings back to Engineering to accelerate future deployments across functions.
Requirements
- Significant production software engineering experience with services, integrations, data pipelines, and APIs. You ship code, not just designs.
- Hands-on experience building with LLMs and agentic systems: prompt/context engineering, tool use, retrieval, evals, agent loops, and failure modes. You’ve shipped agentic systems used by real people.
- Familiarity with agentic coding tools like Claude Code or Codex.
- Strong instincts for collaborating with non-engineering partners—ability to engage in planning meetings, ask the right questions, and define trusted scopes.
- Comfort with ambiguity, favoring prototypes over specs when the path isn’t clear.
- Bias toward building durable systems, balancing quick wins with long-term reliability.
- Effective written and verbal communication, especially explaining agent capabilities and limitations to stakeholders deciding whether to trust them.
Nice-to-have
- Prior experience as a Forward Deployed Engineer, in internal tooling, or solutions engineering at a company deploying AI at scale.
- Experience designing evals and observability for agentic systems in production.
- Familiarity with MCP, tool-calling frameworks, or agent orchestration platforms.
