About the role
Eversource Transmission System Planning seeks two Principal Engineers to provide technical leadership, conduct complex system planning studies, and serve as the recognized technical expert for bulk electric power system modeling and planning. The role involves long-range load forecasting, compliance analyses per Eversource, ISO‑NE, NPCC, and NERC criteria, regulatory testimony, and representation on regional and national committees (NERC, NPCC, ISO‑NE, NEPOOL, IEEE, NATF, state commissions). Positions are based in Hartford, CT; Westwood, MA; or Manchester, NH. Eversource does not offer immigration‑related sponsorship (H‑1B, O‑1, J‑1, TN, E‑3, etc.).
Responsibilities
- Serve as technical specialist applying advanced theories, concepts, and processes to transmission planning.
- Direct highly complex, multi‑discipline engineering assessments and modeling using state‑of‑the‑art technology.
- Prepare documentation and testimony for regulatory filings and compliance studies; present recommendations to all management levels.
- Actively represent Eversource on regional, national, and international committees and working groups (NERC, NATF, IEEE, state public utility commissions).
- Lead and perform reliability and strategic scenario‑based planning studies: thermal, voltage, short‑circuit, dynamic stability, PV, transfer limit, and electromagnetic transient assessments.
- Contribute sound engineering input to model development and updates for transmission lines, transformers, generators, circuit breakers, FACTS devices, inverter‑based resources (IBR), battery storage, etc.
- Conduct critical review of data and assumptions from regional and industry stakeholders.
- Interface with ISO‑NE, area transmission owners, and Eversource departments (UG/OH Transmission Line Engineering, Substation Engineering, Protection & Controls, Asset Management, Compliance, Operations, Substation Technical, DER, etc.) to document system compliance, needs, and challenges.

- Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering with power systems specialization preferred.
- Minimum 10+ years specialized experience in power system design and software simulations; transmission system design/simulation experience preferred.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
- Advanced knowledge of electrical theory applied to electric power supply system planning.
- Detailed experience producing results and conclusions using power system modeling and simulation software for powerflow, voltage, short‑circuit, stability, and electromagnetic transient analysis.
- Experience applying NERC, NPCC, and ISO‑NE standards and planning procedures required.
- Demonstrated very high standards of professional and technical competence with thorough knowledge of system‑wide applications.
- Initiative and assertiveness to identify problem areas, creativity to devise technically sound solutions, and confidence to make complex technical decisions with little supervision.
