About the role

The Principal Software Engineer at General Motors should be an experienced leader deeply involved in software and software quality. They will oversee and own safety and regulatory design compliance for all features in the Body Controls domain across various subsystems.

Responsibilities

  • Define and lead software compliance strategy for new technology and complex features in Body Controls Platform development
  • Drive architecture standards, patterns, and principles, engaging with and leading third-party standards initiatives
  • Establish a forward-looking external posture on emerging trends and standards impacting Body Controls domains
  • Work across organizations to ensure coherence and problem-solving capability in the full-stack architecture
  • Maintain alignment between senior leadership and engineering teams through effective executive communication
  • Ensure high-quality standards from project inception and champion quality improvements through better technical practices
  • Collaborate with other teams to implement system-level architecture and strategies for compliance
  • Initiate large projects with complex architectures, breaking them down into logical components for reuse
  • Improve and deliver reliable software through requirements generation, continuous integration, automated testing, issue tracking, and code reviews
  • Provide technical leadership, guidance, and mentorship to senior and staff engineers, supporting their career progression
  • Lead large initiatives involving multiple stakeholders by driving impact analysis and ensuring alignment with the broader architectural roadmap

Requirements

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electronics & Communication, Electrical Engineering, or related field
  • 10+ years of experience in Embedded Software development and launching quality software into production
  • Demonstrated successful technical track record leading software development teams in complex system environments
  • Experience with safety-critical development and testing in regulated environments (e.g., FDA, FAA, Automotive, Aerospace)
  • Experience with real-time operating systems or middleware
  • Proficiency with C/C++

Skills & Abilities

  • Experience leading external standards committees
  • Experience interfacing with or advising regulators and policy makers
  • Experience developing on and for embedded RTOS/Linux/POSIX systems
  • Experience applying and mentoring team members on software best practices
  • Experience with embedded build systems, CI/CD, and test automation
