Principal - Engineer – Automation (Building Management Systems)
About the role
We are a global healthcare leader headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, dedicated to discovering and bringing life-changing medicines to those who need them. This role is part of the startup team for a new advanced manufacturing facility in Houston, TX, focused on producing API molecules for current and future products, including new modalities. The Principal Automation Engineer – Building Management Systems will support the design and delivery of automation platforms and system integration for the site’s Building Management Systems (BMS). This position offers a unique opportunity to help build the organization, facility, and culture from the ground up, transitioning from corporate integration to a site-based role post-startup.
Responsibilities
- Champion a strong safety culture, mentor and coach others, and apply engineering and automation fundamental principles in design and problem-solving.
- Collaborate with Lilly Engineering, A&E firms, and system integrators to develop requirements and specifications for software development, hardware design, and system architecture.
- Support the design and delivery of the site BMS platform in partnership with Lilly’s A&E and selected BMS supplier.
- Contribute to the design and delivery of AF&IDs, P&IDs, instrument specifications, sequences of operation, panel design, and testing strategies for BMS platforms.
- Collaborate with Tech@Lilly to deliver a fully integrated automation solution scaled for business needs.
- Participate in basic and detailed design, including staffing, statements of work, supplier management, and delivery strategies for automation systems.
- Engage in developing computer system validation strategies.
- Build capabilities within the Houston site automation team and develop site procedures for automation platforms and administration activities.
- Provide engineering support for Process Safety Management (PSM) and Process Hazard Reviews (PHRs).
- Offer technical oversight during the development of equipment and process system User Requirements and related Design Review/Qualification documentation.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related discipline.
- 3+ years of experience in Building Management or Building Automation Systems.
- 3+ years of experience in Process Automation, preferably with Rockwell Automation Platforms, JCI Metasys, or Siemens Desigo (related platforms considered).
- 3+ years of experience in manufacturing.
- Must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis; Lilly will not sponsor work authorization or visas for this role.
Skills
- Technical knowledge in process instrumentation.

- Technical knowledge of data historians.
Additional Information
- Potential for travel (less than 20%, domestic and/or international) to support system testing, factory acceptance testing, and training.
Pay
The anticipated wage for this position is $66,000 - $171,600 per year. Full-time employees are also eligible for a company bonus based on performance.
