Principal Engineer

Location: Hybrid for candidates within commutable distance of our Montvale, NJ office. Fully remote options are also available for candidates based anywhere in New Jersey.

HendrenAI builds voice automation, AI agents, and large language model solutions purpose-built for the healthcare ecosystem. Our platform automates inbound and outbound workflows across pharmacy operations, scheduling, insurance verification, and billing, with deep integrations into pharmacy management systems (Liberty/RedSail) and leading EHR platforms (Epic, athenahealth). We operate on HIPAA-, SOC 2-, and HITECH-compliant infrastructure, and we serve pharmacies, health systems, and pharmaceutical companies.

About the role

The Principal Engineer is the most senior individual contributor on the engineering team, setting technical vision and strategy across the entire organization. You tackle the company’s hardest and most ambiguous problems, define the long-term technical roadmap, and serve as a trusted advisor to engineering and executive leadership.

Responsibilities

• Define and own the long-term technical vision and architecture strategy across the entire organization
• Solve the company’s most complex, ambiguous, and high-stakes technical problems
• Set engineering standards and architectural principles that scale across all teams
• Advise executive and engineering leadership on technology strategy, build-vs-buy decisions, and major investments
• Drive alignment on cross-organizational technical initiatives and resolve the hardest trade-offs
• Mentor Staff and senior engineers and cultivate the next generation of technical leaders
• Anticipate future technical needs and position the platform’s architecture, security, and compliance (HIPAA, SOC 2, HITECH) for long-term scale
• Represent HendrenAI’s engineering excellence externally when appropriate (talks, standards, partnerships)

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience; advanced degree a plus
• 12+ years of professional software engineering experience, including sustained impact at the Staff level or above
• Recognized expertise in large-scale system architecture and the ability to set technical direction for an entire organization
• Proven record of solving novel, ambiguous problems with organization-wide impact
• Exceptional ability to influence, align, and lead across engineering, product, and executive stakeholders
• Deep judgment on technical trade-offs, risk, security, and long-term maintainability

Preferred Qualifications

• Deep experience in healthcare technology, including regulatory and compliance considerations (HIPAA, SOC 2, HITECH)
• Expertise in AI/ML, LLMs, and voice automation at scale
• Experience defining foundational architecture at an early- or growth-stage company
