About the role

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries America, Inc. (MHIA) is seeking a Principal Electrical Engineer to join their team. This role is hybrid and based in Plano, Texas.

Scope

The Principal Electrical Engineer is responsible for product-level engineering of 800VDC power distribution and MV/LV systems for data center applications, from architecture through validation. They will serve as the primary technical interface between customers and U.S.-based power system manufacturers. The role ensures clear, aligned specifications and smooth execution from pre-award through commissioning. The position works cross-functionally to maintain a reliable, cost-effective supply base and ensure alignment on scope, schedule, cost, and compliance. They will also develop new manufacturers by assessing capabilities, defining roles and interfaces, and building scalable, long-term partnerships. This position collaborates with global stakeholders across Japan and the U.S. to align priorities, enable effective execution, and support MHIA's long-term business objectives.

Job Responsibilities

  • Design and Development
    • Develop new technologies and architectures in support of 800VDC and MV/LV power systems
    • Provide support for new IP review and submission
    • Review the market for new technologies and assess their viability and applicability
    • Define scope for new power systems, including interface points, responsibility split, and boundary conditions among customers, manufacturers, and internal stakeholders
    • Own design calculations and analysis packages (load flow, short circuit, protection coordination, arc flash, harmonics, transients/dynamic performance) and maintain traceability to requirements
  • Customer & Specification Alignment
    • Translate customer requirements into clear, complete, and supplier-facing specifications for new power systems
    • Handle technical inquiries from customers and suppliers, ensuring timely clarification and alignment at a system and interface level
    • Act as the primary technical interface with power system manufacturers throughout pre-award and post-award phases
    • Align scope, roles, and responsibilities for product delivery, clearly defining who is responsible for what and where interface boundaries are set
    • Drive contract, schedule, and milestone alignment to enable the timely procurement of long-lead items and protect the overall project critical path
    • Identify, engage, and screen alternative manufacturers to support opportunity development and future sourcing flexibility
    • Carefully coordinate high-level specification, system configuration, and interface alignment during early project phases to support bid development and feasibility assessment
    • Support bid competitiveness by clarifying assumptions, exclusions, and system-level responsibilities, ensuring consistent and aligned proposal content
  • Supplier Development & Supply Base Strengthening
    • Support the identification, qualification, and development of power system manufacturers to build a robust, competitive, and scalable supply base
    • Promote vendor-agnostic system coordination, enabling projects to proceed with power systems without reliance on a single supplier or technical organization
    • Contribute to the continuous improvement of specification processes, interface definition, and supplier collaboration models to support long-term business growth
    • Lead vendor design reviews and manage deviation/issue closure through corrective actions and design improvements
